How messy is the glitter? I need an altar cloth but don't want glitter on the items.

It isn't bad at all. You might find some loose glitter at first, but this is not a fine, dusty glitter. If you run a lint roller over it, it'll be fine. I also use mine for my altar and I've been very happy with it. It's really beautiful.
