I think for my Han Solo one I reinforced the stand base with a few layers of packing tape and it worked pretty well.

Q: how small does it fold down? Trying to figure out if I can transport it in a suitcase

It folds into thirds and comes with a fairly sturdy cellophane type envelope. It would not fit in a suitcase.
