Very nice overview of the major works of Sibelius with a huge emphasis on his Symphonic Poems and Symphonies but we get the majority of his songs and individual pieces the bulk of his other major works though this is hardly complete. For the beginner, it is a choice buy and has many classic recordings of his major works including by Herbert Von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein, so I would suggest this one to anyone who is a Sibelius completest and needs more for their collection.

A Good Sibelius Set, Especially For Those Just Beginning Their Sibelius Journey
This 14-CD set features many well-known and acclaimed recordings, along with a few rarities that DG has licensed in from other labels to make the edition competitive with the many other Sibelius re-releases that are being issued to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth.Chief interest - as usual - lies in the Symphonies, which are represented here very nicely. Symphonies 4-7 feature Karajan's analog recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic, recordings that were acclaimed at their release in the 1960s and that have stayed at or near the top of the heap ever since...and it doesn't hurt that the OIBP remastering these recordings underwent for issue on DG's "Original" series came out so wonderfully. It's easy to understand why DG would include these particular recordings in this box, though I'm sure that most collectors - and even those with only a casual interest in Sibelius - already own them in some form or other, so people will be double dipping on that account.Symphonies 1 & 2 are Bernstein's live digital versions with the Vienna Philharmonic, while the Third features Okko Kamu's DG version with the Helsinki Radio Symphony. Personally, I find Bernstein's DG remakes of the Sibelius symphonies to be real improvements on his CBS recordings from the 1960s with the NYPO. The Vienna First is gripping in the best way possible, with a demonstration-level recording. The Second is a bit eccentric, but not so overdone as to be off putting. Kamu's Third is also very good - understated but never underdone. From the collector's viewpoint, it might have been nice for DG to use their Järvi cycle in it's entirety for this box. But why do that when you have outstanding recordings by Karajan and Bernstein available?Anne-Sophie Mutter handles the honors in the Violin Concerto to great effect, with André Previn at the helm. Neeme Järvi and Jussi Jalas (his wife Margareta was Sibelius' daughter) are featured conductors in a number of the tone poems and orchestral works, Järvi in DG digital recordings with the Gothenberg Symphony, Jalas in Decca recordings with the Hungarian State SO.There's a good selection of songs here, and to DG's credit, they include texts and English translations in the CD booklet for all of the sung works, including Kullervo (which is here represented by a Naxos recording under license featuring the Turku PO under Jorma Panula ). Kim Borg and Tom Krause do the honors in the solo songs, with Soile Isokoski featured as soprano soloist in Luonnotar. The piano works get very short shrift, represented by only 3 pieces. Chamber music also gets but a mention - one needs to check out the BIS complete edition for more options.I can recommend this set as a starter set, as there are plenty of excellent recordings included. Ignore the quacking of the classical music collector ducks who fail to realize that not everybody has been collecting for as long as they have, and that a set of this kind fills a need in the classical marketplace. That said, with all of the very interesting and more-adventurous Sibelius options available right now - from Decca & Warner's boxes of historic recordings to Decca's reissue of Maazel's VPO Symphony cycle on BluRay audio - this set will probably not be falling into the collectors-best-seller category any time soon.Still, 14CDs at under $60 is a bargain however one looks at it.Four stars.

sehr empfehlenswwert
