Good but too light to substitute for burnt sienna
I got red ochre because I'm a traditional painter and I'm always trying to emulate better the exact colors of the masters in my own painting. After reading Vermeer used red ochre in his palette I decided to get it. I tried using it for the dead layer red color in my underpainting. It worked well but was not equal to burnt sienna. It has about the same value as its sister, yellow ocher, and being a rusted clay, its hue is similar to English, Venitian and Indian red. It's more useful to portrait painters than to still life painters like me. I will keep it and use it for full palette mixes but for underpainting I will return to burnt sienna because it is richer in tone and darker in value, which I prefer.
