A charming coming-of-age tale of discovery and adventure
Alfie Bloom and the Secrets of Hexbridge Castle tells the story of a seemingly ordinary schoolboy whose life is turned upside-down when he inherits a castle and is tasked with guarding its magical secrets from malevolent forces including his new headmistresses.Personally, I believe this book effectively introduces its various characters and establishes its setting in a clear, digestible fashion and at an even pace. Plus, I find the story easy to pick up and come back to whenever I put the book down for some time.

Fabulous! I can't wait for the next book! The author has real talent and is a pleasure to read...
I can sense a little inspiration provided by J K Rowling and even a hint of Terry Pratchett but the whole book is very much the author's own. The characters are interesting and engaging and I feel I would like to know more about them. The plot is effective, doesn’t feel contrived and takes interesting turns along the way.I’m guessing that the book’s target readership is young teenagers and the words Gabrielle pust into their mouths (as well as the thoughts she puts into their heads) really helped me understand the way they see the world. It has been a useful bit of education for me!I’m looking forward to the changing dynamics within Alfie’s little group of close friends as they grow a little older. I’m also looking forward to the new magics that I am sure will be introduced in each of the follow up books.

Great story for an 8 year old
Really cute little magical story. Bought this for my nephew for Christmas who is 8, he will love it. The author is from my home town too which makes it a little more special.

'Alfie Bloom' boasts wonderful storytelling coupled with a magic that stays with you long after the final page. As Alfie's Dad says: 'The world is a magnificent, magical place with so much left to be discovered.' A cracking debut, narrated with warmth, wit and originality.
