How Obelix Fell Into the Magic Potion: When He Was a Little Boy (Asterix)

Buy it for the Artwork
No, this is not a typical Asterix story book, but for me it was worth buying for the artwork alone. The basic style is that of all the other Asterix books, but, as others have pointed out, instead of the usual 8 - 12 panels on a page, the illustrations here are full or double page. The drawing is much more detailed and coloring softer and more subtle. In short, recommended to anyone who is a fan of Urdezo's delightful artwork.

Classic
My wife grew up reading Asterix and Obelix. These were part of her Christmas gifts. She loves them.

Not your typical Asterix book.

You can never tire of Asterix and Obelix.
You can never tire of Asterix and Obelix. They are a great source of entertainment, from when I was a child, and now my children enjoy reading them. I like the fact they challenge your child to become more articulate, and my children thoroughly enjoy the dry sense of humor laced throughout the pages.

I always liked to read Asterix and Obelix in French language during my childhood. This is a good one to introduce it to my children who speak English, but not French.

Poor value!
I have always enjoyed the Asterix and Obelix series and grew up with the French language versions as they were the only fun part for me of learning the language. Over the last few years I have collected all the English language versions, most of which are worth the $10 each they cost. So when I saw this one I expected the same. In the 5 minutes it took me to "read" it I was no more informed about our Gallic duo than before, but I was $9.09 poorer. I would not buy this if I was able to make the choice again. Even keeping my OCD pacified was not worth it. Spoiler alert: Obelix fell in the cauldron when he was young! But then we all already knew that.

Ok but not like the comics
It's more like a narrative and with very little details. A bit disappointing.

Short and shoddy
A book this short shouldn't contain spelling mistakes. "It was a noisy scene as our dads used to her together shouting, 'By Toutatis!'"Eh?"He hurried off to find out friends and tell them he'd like a return match."Our friends, surely...Most of the Asterix books look like they took many months to create. This one looks like it was churned out in a week, and translated during a pub lunch. A very short read (<10 minutes) and one that is guaranteed to disappoint.

The question answered
If you are a fan of the Asterix series you'll love this story. It answers that question - the one that has intrigued readers for many a year now. Just how did Obelix fall into the cauldron of magic potion? I'm not going to spoil the story by giving any hints. It's just a great story. If you are new to the tales of Asterix this is still a great stand alone read but you will understand it better if you have read at least 6 of the previous books - all I'm saying is don't start with this one.

Something of a disappointment
I have collected the Asterix books for about 40 years - ever since they were given free by collecting tokens at petrol stations. I have loved them for their wit, and my children for the cartoons, so was rather disappointed that this book is entirely script accompanied by large illustrations and there are none of the witty speech bubbles. I am aware that Rene Goscinny (the writer) died quite some time ago and that recent books were both written and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. The introduction states that this book is something of a rehash of an article for a magazine printed in 1965 and I think that is is unfortunate that Amazon did not make this clear in their advertisement.
