A good basic story to get into
I was enjoying this but deep down it reminded me of something similar I'd read over the years. However, despite that, I did enjoy it and I liked the way it flowed. Not sure I believed the ending but guess it's possible. I will look out for more of Alex Hemmingway.

Robert Pobi continues to blow me away!!!!
I just recently finished River of the Dead. I had to send to the UK for the book since it was not available in the US. So after an interminable wait, I finally received it and began reading it immediately. Having read his first two books, I was very excited to start the new one. I was in awe after the first ten pages. I simply could not put it down and spent many long nights with the book in my hands!! Robert Pobi has created yet another new character, Alex Hemingway, and she is a rich, dark, haunting female homicide detective who truly skirts the boundaries of what is legal and what is not. Yes, she is flawed and troubled but those characteristics only make her the great character that she is. Her honesty, caring, anger, protectiveness, but most of all, her need to do what is right for each victim bring her to the level of many of the wonderful female characters created before her such as McFadyen's Smoky Barrett and O'Connell's Mallory. The story itself is not for the faint of heart. It is brutal and sad all at the same time. The killer is as devious and evil as they come. But the twists and turns will keep you guessing for quite some time. You will be shocked, frustrated, annoyed and, at the same time, cheer for Alex and her uncanny ways of solving the crime. I am hoping that this is not the last we have seen of this wonderful female detective and her partner. I have a strange feeling the Robert Pobi's many fans will meet Alex and company again. I am so happy that I found this author, who happens to be really nice guy as well. Robert Pobi continues to amaze and entertain this reader. And I hope he continues to do so for a very long time.

I haven't finished it yet but it is a good read. The subject matter (children) is described well without too much gore and is enough to be hard to ready without making you want to put the book down. Characters are well written and the plot is so far believable. Dont want to finish it as it has me age turning till the early hours!! Will be looking for other in the series and by the same author.

cracking read if you're able for the gore!
Runs at a great pace, impossible to put down. This is one of those stay up all night jobs that you keep asking yourself "what am I doing reading this?" But still can't put it down

Gory but brilliant crime novel.
I really enjoyed this brilliant if rather gory well written crime novel. I couldn't put it down and finished it in three days. The ending did take me by surprise. I shall look forward to reading more Robert Pobi novels if they are as good as this especially if they again feature Hemingway and Phelps.

I read the first Robert Pobi book Bloodman which I couldn't put down and thought was the best read ever!!! I am only half way through this one but I know it will not disappoint.

Another twist in the tale
Second of this author's books that I have read, as good as the first. An intriguing story which twists and turns until the final pages, try it, you'll be hooked by Robert Pobi.

Up there with Cornwall, Billingham and Lackberg. Read it!
Just started reading, can't put down. Gritty, pretty grisly storyline, peppered with sharp, witty retort. Feisty female Detective partnered with hulking, hard-as-nails-but-softy-at-heart giant. Looking forward to reading Pobi's debut novel Bloodman.
