"History Coming Alive"
Those of us, like myself, who live in Durham, New Hampshire, have always considered Durham to be “ground zero” when it comes to the proposed Aristotle Onassis oil refinery issue. Lisa Moll reminds us in her new book, Rye’s Battle of the Century, that Rye also has a significant and previously somewhat unrecognized central position in that history. Being home, as it indeed was, to the proposed tanker terminal on the Isles of Shoals as well as the only transit pipeline route to carry the oil from sea to the refinery, places Rye in the very heart of the controversy. Lisa’s book does justice to the Town of Rye’s critical role in that history. In our day, Lisa Moll’s book gives us a handle on the idea that people today who block the construction of oil and gas pipelines are true patriots, as we are now learning every day in the fight against climate change and the carbon and methane emissions from oil and gas development and transit which are significant causative factors in run-away climate change. Rye’s Battle of the Century shows us history coming alive, and how important it is for all of us to practice our democracy in the fight to stop construction of fossil fuel pipelines and to embrace renewable energy – and a more acceptable planet on which to live. Thank You for Saving Our Shores!
This book is an excellent reminder of the power of grass roots protest. Now, everytime I go to the New Hampshire shore, I say a "thank you" to all of the people who fought the then Gov. of NH and Aristotle Onassis's 1970s plan to build the largest oil refineries in the world on our small but beautiful seacoast. And a special thank you to the Remick sisters of Rye, who refused to sell their land to Olympic Oil, thereby stopping the progress of their plan in its tracks. New Hampshire would be a very different place if those oil refineries had been built here. Instead, we have a beautifully preserved coastline, lovely beaches, clean water, and clean air. THANK YOU!!!

Yeah to Stopping the Pipeline...
Author Lisa Moll did a wonderful job on researching and capturing the true spirit and integrity of the people of Rye, NH. The book is a good testament of how strong the people and community are of Rye, NH. They did not let big powerful people or companies try to buy their town out to put in a pipeline for the almighty dollar! They worked tirelessly to fight off anyone trying to ruin their beautiful coastline. Thanks to all the many people involved, Rye, NH continues to be a wonderful, clean, beautiful area!
