A Trail of Discovery for the Creative Map Makers
This book is a delicious find. It undertakes nothing less than to gather into one source a wide variety of approaches to mapping the world of our imaginations. A wonderful collection with a wide range of points of view about how the world can be seen and understood. The wide range of artists, from well known to not so well recognized, each brings a unique vision to bear in the way of understanding their worlds. It's truly mind expanding in the various cosmologies and hypothetical what ifs that are represented between the covers. This book supports repeated immersion as one considers the different worlds that are conjured within. As an artist I find the contents to be wonderfully liberating while considering my own thoughts on the subject. Congratulations to Katherine Harmon on such a fine job of researching and assembling these images. Surely a labor of love as is shown to us in style and content. A great gift for the creative one in your life.

A different visual perspective.
I was using this book to spur my own imaginative process in seeing geography and landscape in a different format. This book did just that.

Great resource for contemporary art
When I first heard about this book, I immediately checked out a library copy. Finally I decided to buy one for myself and do not regret my purchase. This book is an excellent resource for artists and/or art students, especially about creative ways of mapping and/or organizing various information and meaning. The book is filled with a breadth of many contemporary artists' work related to this theme of cartography and the descriptions accompanying the images are also concise and helpful. But the images say it all.I highly recommend this book to those that want to expand their creative imagination and explore mapping as an expanded field.

one or two maps a day would work better. Some creative people out there
Interesting book of maps. Made me look at maps in a whole different way with more appreciation for them. Not a book to read straight through, one or two maps a day would work better. Some creative people out there.

Excellent, inspiring book
I was impressed with the pages I saw in the quick look on Amazon. Really beautiful, thought-provoking work that makes you look twice. Kind of like a sample of personal journal pages and strong artistic expression. I get something new from each piece each time I look through the book. Highly recommend this.

Dissapointing for This Reader, But Tastes Differ
For me, this wasn't the knockout I expected, from the subject matter and from the glowing reviews. It was interesting and amusing, and in instances quite lovely. It was not, however, as fascinating as I had hoped; nor is it a book that I will return to over and over. Since I am a map freak more than an art freak, the problem may be me -- I really loved "Strange Maps"

The Map As Art
The Map As Art: Contemporary Artists Explore CartographyThis book provides an excellent overview of artists who have explored cartography. The introduction discusses the development of this field and considers the theoretical implications of this. There is a strong leaning towards more political pieces in this book.Really good book though!

Fascinating and inspiring!
Fascinating! Art and geography, art and maps...changes the way of looking, interpreting and appreciating both. Appreciating maps as art sounds like it might be referring to those beautiful hand-draw old maps of the past...but no!...this goes further and u, while clearly rating maps and mapping usesthem as inspiration for art. The examples of artists working with maps is eclectic, fascinating and inspiring.
