The Candlemass Road

I got to the end of the book and asked myself..Exactly what has this story been all about.Initially the plot was intriguing, then the characters got in the way of the flow of the storyline, then the action got underway, then everything ground to a halt. Disappointing and confusing.

An unusual book, I found it a quick read but surprisingly moving. I think the historical authenticity excellent for a work of fiction. I'll definitely re-read it in the future. This is principally the same story as 'The Reavers' except that Candlemass Road is serious and Reavers very, very funny. I'm glad for this reason I read 'The Reavers' first as I don't know if I would have got into it if I'd read Candlemass Road first.

A well written historically based book. Fascinating if you know your Border history. Interweaving fiction with historical fact.

Interesting novel,more of an extended short story.Good historical detail as always where is this author. Not quite up to standard of some of his other novels but well worth reading.

Thought it was awful. The author made himself felt on every page.
