Tangram: A Classic Chinese Handmade Wooden Puzzle for Adults from SiamMandalay

This is very nicely made and nicely packaged but you should know that it doesn't come with puzzle challenges. There are many websites though with the challenges. I bought this as a gift and so made a puzzle book and solutions book from downloads. It is a very beautiful tangram set, so I didn't mind.

This is a "standard" set of tangrams, the same set of shapes that have been around since at least the 80's when I was a kid--I say this because there are a few different standards out there now, with different shapes that won't likely work with the standard silhouette-style puzzles out there. They're nice quality and definitely a step up from plastic or some of the multi-colored painted sets. The box is about 6 inches wide, a good size (not too small).These look a little better than some of the pictures suggest, with an attractive, uniform wood stain (some of the pictures make the parts appear slightly different colored). We specifically wanted a set of Tangrams that were all the same color because I feel that's part of the fun, not having wild colors distract from trying to fit the pieces into a sillhouette.They're for our 5 year old, but immediately my wife and I got sucked into trying to build a cat from a silhouette we found on the Internet. These are still as simple and yet satisfying a puzzle today as ever. It would have been nice if it came with a small booklet of puzzles, but they're easy enough to find on the Internet.

Very nicely made, addictive game- puzzle. You can play on your own or with friend but you will need 2 of them. But worth it.

I accidentally came across a listing for a wooden puzzle here at Amazon for less than half the price I paid for the same product at a gift shop. I like my puzzle very much, so I thought I'd get another. This is the one I chose. It's beautiful - hand crafted, and it looks it. I had never heard of Tangrams before, and reading about them was fascinating. Amazing to think so many shapes can be formed from seven pieces! I struggled with this one, thank goodness it's not an IQ test :) But, I have finally "got it." I think.The puzzle doesn't come with any printout or booklet of additional puzzle shapes to try. That, you can get off the internet. I've tried a few of those, and will try, try again.IMPORTANT: You need to be careful putting on the top of the box or it will jam. This happened to me, and I had to use a pen knife to pry the top off. Make sure the grain of the wood on the box top and its base are going in the same direction and you'll be OK. I don't consider this a fault, I think it's the nature of the product, and use will loosen it up (so to speak). I haven't put the base of the puzzle in the box top when I'm using it, instead, I dump the pieces into the box top for play.A great piece for a desk or coffee table, and the price can't be beat.
