American Honey [DVD]

Saw this movie, little clips going around on tik tok. Finally gave in to the curiosity and hype, AND I GET IT! Such a great movie and story line.

As I have never written a review for anything before, ever, the fact that I feel the desire to comment on how ABSOLUTELY AMAZING this film is speaks volumes! I absolutely adored the chemistry between new actress Sasha Lane and Shia Lebouf. I have been a fan of Shia since his days on Disney Channel's "Even Stevens" and since I have had a massive crush on him since then, I've made it a point to see almost every one of his films and this is by far his best work yet!!! Even the supporting characters offer such rich dialogue and complex personas that still strongly resonate and represent a large class of impoverished individuals in the south and mid-west that are largely ignored by mainstream America. As a social worker, I especially appreciated the the writers' highlighting the devastating effects that meth addictions are having on small towns. I absolutely adored the simplistic story line, which I feel made it all the more real. I did not even want the movie to end and I usually don't like super long films. The only critic that I have is that after over two hours, the film left me with far my questions than answers. I'd really like to know what happens to Star and Jake and the rest of the crew. Are Star and Jake back together? Do they get their own trailer? How did Jake get back into the crew? How long do they stay with the crew, because I find it hard to believe that that lifestyle can last long. The only thing about the film that I did not like was the ending, it seemed abrupt and quite simply confusing. Hopefully, there will be a sequel.Oh, I forgot, the other thing that I did not like was that Jake never seemed to wear protection. I kept expecting Star to pop up pregnant and then get kicked out of the group.

Surprised I liked this as much as I did. Kept coming back to it… something raw and real; fine performances.

"American Honey" is based on the events surrounding a young woman named Star. As a loner, and a mature runaway, Star's escapades lead to her joining a sales crew, made up of other young wanderers trying to survive. Sasha's sojourn involves us in sprawling vistas of horizons glowing over trafficked highways, distant clumps of concrete subdivisions isolated in the section plot schemes. It makes me mindful of glorious dark-sheep themes. Songs of the soundtrack in particular, already tintilating in hang-out room moods and hip-hop cavalierness; these exotic spheres are cinematized like sun soaked pixels catalyzing rogue excitements. Star is unique. It seems like Sasha Lane playing Star is writing the movie as she haphazardly runs away from her father into a band of traveling sales people. As I said, the shimmering music is made marquee in the chartered road jaunts of this group, but other pop songs come to mind-specifically those tunes of some young women artist whose certain hit songs evoke images of female revelry. Here, in this film however, Star is intense and brave-but, unlike those above mentioned hits, Star is quiet and bares a stern stance, serious and purposeful. Star's band of magazine sellers keep her company as they trek through the plains of middle-America, but Star's welcomeness is unsecured within this unenrolled class. Riley Keough as Krystal, the leader of this traveling band is a phenomenal act to watch. Her part is short in time but natural and believable. As is Shia Lebeouf's portrayal of Jake, one of the senior tour members in "American Honey".

Every year during the summer the vans would drop off kids at the end of the street to play on liberal guilt or whatever worked to sell magazines for a company that didn't exist, had no phone or ability to even speak with the head of the group to verify what obviously couldn't be verified. I'm a sucker+having worked many jobs to pay rent & fast food jobs to get a meal. I didn't scam for money. I think the film was sugar coating the whole thing, especially the group leader. That's who takes advantage of these kids with unrealistic dreams because they didn't know better & no one taught them otherwise.. THAT would be helping underserviced kids. They formed a "family" with the "mother" providing judgment, punishment, and rewarding with drugs, alcohol, and unprotected sex, loud crazy kids gone wild behavior all to the enrichment of adults place them in disadvantaged positions wasting their youth enriching others.

I’d already watched this movie and decided to buy it on DVD , unfortunately it hasn’t shown up and I am getting messages saying it’s been delayed until 3rd July , I ordered it on the 24th June !!!!

I love this movie so much!!! I would watch it 100 times if I had the time

2016 belegte das 2009 gedrehte britische Drama "Fish Tank" von Andrea Arnold bei einer Umfrage der BBC zu den bedeutendsten Filmen des 21. Jahrhunderts den 65. Platz. Die Regisseurin lässt sich sehr viel Zeit für ihre Filmprojekte. Nach einem nicht ganz so erfolgreichen Ausflug ins Fach des Historienfilm mit Emily Brontes "Wuthering Heights" im Jahr 2011, gelang ihr mit dem schrägen Roadmovie "American Honey" ein weiterer Treffer.Wie in "Fish Tank" ist die Hauptfigur eine junge und starke Frau, die aber in einer dreckigen Umgebung ihr Leben lebt. Die 18jährige Star (Sasha Lane) lebt bei ihrem Stiefvater (Johnny Pierce II) und ihren beiden wesentlich jüngeren Halbgeschwistern. In der ersten Szene sieht man Star und die beiden Kids, wie sie Mülltonnen eines Einkaufszentrums nach was Essbarem absuchen. Am Abend macht sich dann "Daddy" an sie heran. Dies führt dann zur Entscheidung das Angebot anzunehmen Mitglied einer Drückerkolonne zu werden. Ein bisschen dazu beigetragen hat auch der smarte Anführer Jake (Shia LaBeouf) der Meute, den sie im Einkaufszentrum Walmart kennengelernt hat und der ihr sofort gefiel. Auch der Typ hat mir ihr geflirtet und sogleich das Angebot gemacht, dass sie einen Job haben könnte. Sie müsse aber ungebunden sein und sozusagen auf Tournee gehen, um Zeitschriften zu verkaufen. Bei ihrer Mom (Chasity Hunsaker) gibt sie die beiden Geschwister ab und dann ab ins Abenteuer. Auf in den amerikanischen Traum. Als Chefin stellt sich die zickige Krystal (Riley Keough) für die Teenager wie Pagan (Arielle Holmes), Corey (McCaul Lombardi), Billy (Chad Cox), Austin (Garry Howell), Sean (Kenneth Kory Tucker), JJ (Raymond Coalson), Kalium (Isaiah Stone), Runt (Dakota Powers), Shaunte (Shawna Rae Moseley), Katness (Crystal Ice) oder QT (Veronica Etzell) arbeiten. Dabei fungiert das charismatische Verkäufertalent Jake als Art Leitwolf, der die Gruppe bestens motivieren kann. Wenn er "We found love in a hopeless place" von Rihanna anstimmt, dann hat er alle im Griff und weiß, dass jeder der beste beim Verkaufen von Zeitschriften sein will, die keiner braucht.Von ihrer Heimat Oklahoma startet Stars Abenteuer im Mittleren Westen. Tagsüber ist hartes Arbeiten angesagt. Jeder muss bei Haustürgeschäften den größtmöglichen Erfolg ansteuern. Am Abend gehts dann ans Feiern. Krystal, die Chefin, mietet dafür einige Zimmer in billigen Motels. Natürlich beginnt auch eine heiße Affäre mit Jake. Aber das muss natürlich geheim bleiben, weil Liebschaften untereinander verboten sind...Ein bisschen erinnert das Szenario in "American Honey" an Charles Dickes "Olver Twist" und die kühle Krystal erweist sich als knallharte Geldschefflerin ala Fagin. Sie selbst lässt sich im Cabrio von Jake fahren, die anderen fahren im Bus.Dabei zeigt Shia LaBeouf, bekannt aus dem Transformern Filmen, sein schauspielerisches Talent. Seine Figur Jake erscheint extrem umtriebig, sehr selbstbewusst - ist aber im Kern total unsicher, wie sich im Lauf der Handlung immer mehr herausstellt. Star, sehr gut gespielt von Neuling Sasha Lane, hat auch noch nicht ihren Platz im Leben gefunden. Sie ist eine starke Persönlichkeit, aber das muss sie erst noch selbst herausfinden. Sie reift aber im Laufe der Geschichte. Sehr signifikant die Szenen, in denen sie ein Insekt entweder vor dem Ertrinken vor dem Einsperren rettet, indem sie dem Tier den Weg zum Fenster frei macht."American Honey" ist in seinen Schilderungen knallhart, es geht dabei darum, dass man im Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten, immer noch schnelles Geld machen kann. Die schlechtesten Verlierer lässt Krystle am Wochenende im Faustkampf gegeneinander antreten. So ist immer auch für eine drastische Form der Motivation gesorgt.Der zutiefst beeindruckende Film über das Harte Leben der Drückerkolonnen zeigt ausserdem welchen Preis man zahlen muss für diesen immer noch existierenden amerikanischen Traum. Man muss aber bereit sein, Dinge zu tun, die man lieber verschweigt. Der Film dauert 163 Minuten und wirkt phasenweise wie ein Sog. Am Ende darf gerätselt werden, wie Stars Leben weitergeht. Taucht sie ein in eine neue bessere Erfahrung oder lässt sie sich weiter vom Strudel der Kolonne mitreißen ?

Terrific movie!
