Yes it requires assembly. This is only the chimes.

Q: How does 5 pieces of 5 different sizes work out to 30? Core math?

There are 6 pieces each of the 5 different size tubes. TBH I think the tubes are plastic and they make a clicking sound when they touch. I was very disappointed in this product and returned them without hesitation.

Q: What are they made of?

most likely thin aluminum and don't order them. they only had 5 in what was supposed to be 30 and they are pitiful.
