Works great once you figure out how to change to English settings. No instructions included.
The first thing to say is that this is a great little translation pen. I'm surprised by how well it works and how easy it is to use once setup. It's only let down by the lack of instructions and the fact that it arrives set to Chinese language, making it difficult to setup until you find the right settings to change. Ironically, you either need a Chinese person to set it to English, or another pen previously setup to translate it.The manual contains absolutely no instructions on use, just dlsafety warnings and warranty details. Hopefully, my video will help you navigate the menu to set it to English in order to use it.There are 2 buttons on the side. The blue one seems to be the power button and the red one is a back button. Holding down the power button switches it on. You're initially faced with setting up your WiFi connection in Chinese. That's fairly straight forward thanks to the responsive touch screen keyboard. Select any entry on the following screen (I suspect this is the age setting, as it's both designed for kids and adults. The adult setting is the far right one). Follow my instructions to find the globe-like icon, enter and click the middle option to change to English.Thankfully, operation is fairly straight forward and, once in English, I was able to pretty much understand how this works within 5 minutes. You can scan over English or Chinese writing and it converts it on screen. There's also a voice recording function for each translation. This appears to be to allow you to repeat a scanned phrase and play it back to yourself. This would have got 5 stars if there were proper instructions included and it arrived in English. I have given it a rather positive 4 stars though, since this works well, quickly and is relatively easy to use once changed to English. I'll actually find this useful for work, since we occasionally have Chinese people to work with that require translators, so it can come in quite handy. It's also useful for translating Chinese instruction manuals (ironically) as they're often not translated into English properly.I can definitely recommend this.

Premium, good quality
This pen has a nice build quality, feels weighty and has a premium looking, sharp clear screen. The default language on the device is Chinese, which means I unknowingly agreed to a privacy policy which was written in Chinese which wasn’t a great start. Eventually I was able to change the language into English; luckily some basic knowledge in Kanji allowed me to find the correct character for English. Scanning sentences took a couple efforts, for a child it may be difficult to strafe and drag a perfect line to capture the whole sentence which requires a little practice. On a minor point the sound of scraping the page actually made my dog bark as its quite squeaky on paper so it could raise some eyebrows in a library. Once I got used to scanning words i was having fun finding out the meaning of various Chinese characters and hearing their complex intonation through the device. Not only does it provide audio guidance on how the character is pronounced but you are given instructions on how to approach writing the characters in the correct order. I tried going offline and was impressed by the 16gb storage provided and received a similar experience to being online, there is also a mic on the device although there doesn’t seem to any purpose for it, there is no audio recording button or function. The American and english translations seem to be identical, on early usage this didn’t seem a problem but as a translation device there could be some inaccuracies later. The pen allows minimal distraction for children whilst they are scanning books, which may be a reason why you’d opt for a translator pen instead of a mobile app as there are a few mobile apps that provide a similar experience and an extreme fraction of the cost. This is important to note as camera scanning device screens is something which this pen can’t reliably provide as it requires a firm press and scraping action, think of a tip ex mouse if you’ve ever used one of those.

Very useful once you manage to switch the menu to English
First of all, let's look at the quality of the translation pen. It's a flat pen look with metallic case and good size of digital screen display. The charging outlet is a usb-c type which is common. When you hold it on hand you can tell it is well made and sturdy, weight is not heavy to carry around and quite handy to slide in any of your pockets or place it in pencil case. After you turned on, you will experience a little hurdle if you can't read chinese as the start screen is chinese and you will have to go through the user agreement, get wifi connected, choose level and then to the menu page to change user language to English. This is the bit that i think imoo have to consider changing the startup language to English if they are targeting the English speaking segment.Once the user menu changed to English, everything is pretty straightforward. The pen reading is quite accurate and the tone it speak is very good pronounciation. My boy study chinese as one of his foreign modern language and find it very useful when using it to do his revision and self study. I managed to test the type of speed that you need to scan through the words in order for it to be recognised, it works fine with slow to medium speed but a bit of luck if you are doing it too fast. It also support scanning word or sentences. In terms of price, it was 199.99 at the time of review, not a cheap price but if you are actively in need of translation then this is a lot easier compared to looking up in dictionary and more accurate than google translate.

Lots of good things to say about this
Firstly this is a pretty decent product. It is a little confusing in terms of who it’s for. The description says it’s for kids and I’m not sure if it’s meant to be for Chinese children learning English or somebody else.In terms of the set up, it’s really easy. You turn it on and put in your Wi-Fi password and simply can scan your text. However all the instructions are in Chinese and therefore I think this is for translating for Chinese people. I.e. you scan the Chinese and it translates into English. I only think this because the text is all in Chinese but you could use it if you had reasonable Chinese knowledge to help you.It has a quite a nice feature where it set up how to write the characters too. It’s really easy to use so I do think it’s going to be useful but I am not sure if a beginner could use this. You need to already be quite quite proficient in Chinese before you could use this sensibly. The price is pretty high too but you could technically translate a whole book (you can scroll on the screen). It depends what you want this for I guess but don’t buy this if you don’t know any Chinese and are expecting to be able to easily read any Chinese because you might need some knowledge to set up initially!
