Life Skills Workbook for Teens with Autism and Special Needs: Activities to help develop Independence, Self Advocacy and Self Care

Very useful to my daughter in her work.

My mom got this book for us to go through together to try and help me figure out how to be more independent. Keep in mind I'm a full-time student at my university where I live on campus, and I'm able to navigate my classes and utilize the public bus system. However, this book comes across like it's supposed to help me. The autistic person. But it helps my mom instead. There's also some problematic views in this, spefically the section about friends. The author suggests that the parent of the autistic child try and almost force their kid to blend in. To have them wear the clothes that are in style, to have them cut their hair a certain way or even carry a certain bag. It made me feel like she was trying to tell parents that their kid should be shoved into the popular clothing even if they don't like it, that they should have a certain haircut even if they like their hair the way it is. It honestly came across to me as offensive; she's trying to tell parents that their kid needs to be as neurotypical as possible when in reality they need independence. And independence and being neurotypical are two different things. There are neurotypical people who can't be independent to save their life. And there are autistic people who are independent and can live alone. It feels infantalizing in a way I've never before experienced.

Disappointed this book contain all things I have already tried for my 16 year old daughter.

I would recommend it for parents of very young children with autism 0-5. If your a professional you should all ready know the content contained inside.
