The essential Yeats
An excellent introduction to the poetry of WB Yeats. John Kelly, editor of Yeats' letters, has chosen the major poems for which he gives useful notes. His preface provides a thoughtful, well informed introduction to the life and work.Good value in every way.

“The world's more full of weeping than you can understand"
I saw Bob Geldof talking about W. B. Yeats as part of the BBC's series of programmes remembering the events of Easter 1916 in Ireland. It prompted me to look for a volume of poetry by Yeats and this Faber 80th Anniversary Edition seemed to fit the bill nicely – the anniversary is Faber's rather than Yeats, and this is one volume from a small series that also includes Auden, Betjemen, Eliot, Hughes and Plath. This Yeats 80th anniversary edition was published on 7 May 2009 and this collection of Yeats's poems was selected by Seamus Heaney. The Paperback volume on the same Amazon Product Page is the Everyman edition – NOT this Faber one! The late Seamus Heaney was probably the best person to compile this volume and in his words Yeats work encourages us 'to be more resolutely and abundantly alive, whatever the conditions.' This is a book of thought-provoking work that you will return to more than once – familiar, strange and rather other-worldly these images will remain with for a long time. However, this volume is just an introduction to a much larger body of work.

Excellent Poetry
This collection is a brilliant and fun read. Yeats' prose are excellent, the man had some serious chops!

Yeats could benefit from more background information.
I purchased this edition because it is a set text this year for the European Schools. I find that given the difficulty of Yeats's poetry for secondary school pupils, it could do with more extensive notes and background information. The older Oxford edition is very helpful in this regard.
