This product is quite effective in cleaning a carpet. Spray on a pre-treatment mist, brush in the damp, dusty product, let it dry and vacuum. Done, ready to use. It does make a sort of sawdust-looking mess, but that is the essential function of how it cleans - and that residue vacuums up nicely. This is especially good for carpets that are too unwieldy to take outside for a wetter process. I use a floor machine with a soft brush to force the product deep into the carpet/rug - but that may not be suitable for a fragile/delicate rug. It would be good to use the whole batch sooner than later because it is likely going to dry out over a fairly short time and become ineffective.

We purchased both the capture brand and the Oreck brand of Dry Carpet cleaner and we couldn't tell any difference. The dry carpet cleaner did a great job in many areas, and was especially good at restoring old, greasy spots in our carpeting (think where the carpet touches a hard surface like the entrance to your house). We were disappointed that neither nor Oreck did a great job of cleaning the carpets. I firmly believe in the dry carpet cleaning system, but they both left a bunch of spots behind that we had to manually clean with another spray.Still, if you haven't tried dry carpet cleaning before, it is so much better for the carpets overall and really makes them revive much better than the wet systems do. Additionally, the particles that are left behind continue to act as little sponges and continue to clean over time. We started using this in the early 1990s for dog accidents, but have used it to clean entire rugs and for other spot cleaning. It works extremely well and has a great fresh scent. We've used it on very expensive rugs, and those rugs have maintained their like-new appearance for years.The way it works is ingenious: with a little dampness the particle expand and contact the dirt particles. When they dry, the particles shrink but keep the dirt attached. Vacuuming removes both the Capture particle and the attached dirt particle(s).Tip: do not saturate the area with the (required) Pre-Mist spray; use a light mist. Put another way, if the area is not dry and able to be vacuumed in about 30 minutes, then you are using too much Pre-Mist.
