Making Midcentury Modern

I just purchased this beautiful book from one of Amazon's sellers and I'm floored with its quality, gorgeous photographs and coffee-table size, as well as the great message within its pages from Mr. Kennedy. This is a feast for the eyes, not only for Mid-century Mod lovers and Palm Springs aficionados like me, but anyone into modern, whimsical, colorful design. The book's images are evocative of Lilly Pulitzer, Kate Spade, Trina Turk, and Tory Burch's styles, all rolled-up in one, with luscious pictures of care-free, sun-loving living, whether in Palm Springs, or wherever you are, which is the main message from Mr. Kennedy, that this way of living can be attainable, if only you try. He's got 100 ways/tips to do so, each one more inspiring than the next. I'm visiting Palm Springs again in May and will bring my book, in hopes to get it signed if by chance I meet Mr. Kennedy at his shop there. A truly great addition to my many books on Mid-Century Modem architecture, décor and lifestyle.

What I like about it most was that it made an excellent coffee table book for my son who just bought a mid-century home. It had colorful photos that explains in layman's term the mid century style prevalent in Palm Springs, California during the 50s and 60s. This helps saving my son from having to explain what his house and decor style is all about. What sets this book apart from the other mid century books is that the author himself was at the forefront of the Palm Springs movement. This makes for authenticity.There is nothing I do not like about the book. It was exactly what I was looking for and at an excellent price point too.

This book has great pictures .I expected more mid century modern content . I wanted more substance. I would rate it as barely 4 stars .

I personally have known the author (Christopher Kennedy) for years. He is hands down one of the most talented designers in Palm Springs and creates the most fabulous mid-century interiors. This is his 2nd book (I own the first one too - A MUST HAVE!). It is well-written, filled with great and clever ideas, and the photography is beautiful.If you love mid-century this is a must add to your library.

This is not only a good resource, but is interesting, too. The pictures are big and cover many areas for home decor in mid-mod style. This was one of the most useful books I got to help me design a new look for my house.

Short review: very kitsch, eccentricLonger review: This book is very kitschy and at times over the top. If that's your style, then this book would be a fun read. I was looking for colors and the mid century vibe for inspiration, so I bought this book based on the cover. While several photos were cheesy looking, it does offer some inspiration. If nothing else, the rooms are playful. One thing I particularly hated, were all the really lame titles used throughout the book, which are supposed to be fun, but seem kinda awkward. Some of the rooms had screaming colors paired with more screaming colors, in a not so good way. Be sure to put your sunglasses on prior to opening. I also didn't think the author made mid century modern, just mid century. Another disappointment is that it's really just a book about his home, and does not incorporate more than one home for ideas. Lastly, the rooms look very (very) staged, as if they are in a catalog. You don't feel like anyone lives there.

This is a gift to my daughter who intends to decorate her "new" home Midcentury modern. She is enthralled.

A fantastic book, love the big glossy photos and I think the little write ups add a very nice personal touch. Wish I could source the California Modern book by Christopher Kennedy.
