Are these breathable or air-tight?

I'd say breathable. They have an elastic hem so they're easy to put on. They're not like Tupperware. Still, they're very convenient. I just wouldn't use them for long-term storage or liquids.

How does food stay fresh if cotton material?

I don't leave it covered indefinitely. Haven't had any problems if I use stuff up within a few days. I love them, wash up great and I don't use nearly as much plastic wrap or tinfoil.

Is this actually made of only cotton? One of the picture descriptions says wax coated & waterproof??

The bowl covers aren’t lined with wax, but it is a silicone? Binding to cotton top. They was very easily by hand, dry quickly. I’m very pleased I bought them. I’ll give them a 5*rating!
