Great Society to Era of Obamacare
Awesome treatise on the struggles we've dealt with and failed to deal with to improve access. We've had some revolutions in increasing access. But the expenditures have increased. The dialogue is just starting. For me it sure made the Canadian model look very attractive. Some exciting mile markers but clearly healthcare is not a normal commodity and needs much more government interventions to control costs while continuing to fairly ensure access. Will be the interesting to see what can be done to sustain Medicaid and Medicaid Expansion as well as ensure adequate funds for Medicare for all the soon to be retiring Boomers going into long term custodial care/nursing homes. Interesting times. We will be forced to make some tough decisions ahead as it's obviously an unsustainable increase of Healthcare as percentage of GDP ahead. Look forward to living through those critical years and seeing how we respond. America is a great country. How will we respond? Wonderful look at improving healthcare that rises above politics (the red state/blue state divide) to address complex issues ahead.

Worth the Purchase
Needed it for my MPH program and will actually say that I learned a lot from this reading. It’s very interesting and well worth the purchase instead of renting it . Valuable information

Great Resource for Medical Students
I came across Donald Barr's work with my interest in health disparities. I came across his other work, including this book. As an MD PhD student, I was really shocked by how much I didn't know about the healthcare expenditures, mishaps, and struggles in our current medical system. However, I appreciated the clarity and historical background the author provides to understand how we got where we are. I think this a great introduction for anyone wanted a well documented and honest look at our healthcare system. I know it's given me a greater appreciation for what is needed to change as I head to the clinic in a year.

Great book! Thoughtful, comprehensive, balanced, and well-researched
I am a public health physician. In 2012, I bought the 2011 (2nd Edition) of this book and was very pleased with the cultural historical approach to US health care policy. I was so pleased, in fact, that I recently bought the 3rd edition that covers the Affordable Care Act in good detail. Again, I was very pleased. The book is thoughtful, comprehensive, balanced, and well-researched. This book is a great way to get up-to-speed on this topic area.
