Maila, Maybe. It has plastic/nylon parts where weight might cause a failure. Otherwise, it depends on how well it is attached to the overhead. I've used it over my utility sink (under a cabinet) for drying shirts & blouses (drips into the sink) that can't be run in the dryer.

Can it be mounted to the side wall instead of the ceiling?

I mounted it to the bottom of a shelf in the closet. I am afraid that mounted to a side wall, what you hang on it might put too much stress on the screws. AMAZON does sell another style that does mount well on the wall or side of a cabinet.
