Thanks Jevan for writing this book!
Every person should read this book if they want some invaluable knowledge imparted upon them. I have raised my awareness and knowledge beyond levels of comprehension by reading this book. If you want to wake up and dispel the "messed-up-ness" we in America are ingrained to believe, calm your chatter brain, and become the god or goddess you are destined to be, then click add to cart. Read to the very end, I find the conclusion to be quite inspiring, and don;t just skip to that part, the entire book is worth reading from start to finish. To the naysayers, just be thankful for Jevan's life efforts in sharing this knowledge with us, and speaking his truth, I feel maybe the naysayers didn't read the whole thing. I bought this book 2 years ago, and just barely read it over the last week. It's amazing. There's a direct connection between paleo lifestyle and meditative powers. Very helpful for beginning meditation, with brief to the point explanations. Thanks again!!!

A REALLY Good Book in Further Understanding of Buddhism and Meditation
I have read quite a few books on Buddhism and Meditation, and I don't leave reviews very often. I almost didn't buy this book, thanks to some of the very incorrect reviews about women in this book. I consider myself a pretty conservative guy who tries to be respectful of everyone, and I did not consider what he said about women derogatory at all. Sure, he's a male author, so he is writing from his perspective. BUT, even if those things were true, it is rare for me to learn new insights about Buddhism and Meditation that I haven't read somewhere else before. I gained quite a few new perspectives about Buddhism and Meditation that were worth many times the price of this book (if you can put a value on them). Even if you have been Meditating for a while and have read other books on Buddhism, your money will be well spent on this book. There are some slow parts in the first 1/2 of this book where it gets a bit repetitious. I almost think he may have put them there so that only the persistent get the extra wisdom in the second half of the book. I don't know or have ever met the author, so I am not gaining anything personally from this review. I only bought the book a few days ago and just finished it, and I had to leave a review. Seriously, don't even think any further, just go up and click the buy button. If you are serious about learning more about Buddhism, Meditation, and the way to your best life, you will be glad you did.

Unexpectedly Enjoyable
Really great book. I'll be honest, everything about the title of this book put me off. Using "awakened," the author calling himself a "biohacker." It screamed "hipster white-boy buddhism" and it actually is. But in a good way.The author takes a secular approach to the meaning of life. If you're already willing to live as an optimistic nihilist, this is the book for you. It goes over evolutionary reasons for the way we are, why modern society is a bad fit, and how to make yourself happier and healthier within that context. Briefly touches on a lot of popular topics related to this- the Paleo diet, hunter-gatherer lifestyles, etc etc. The book also talks a good amount about meditation and eastern philosophy. The book doesn't cite the studies mentioned super well, but it makes a good case for meditation and adopting a little bit of buddhist philosophy to make yourself happier. It doesn't claim to have any big metaphysical answers, but the advice is a decent place to start if you're looking to be happier. It can be pretty pretentious at times, but that won't bother you if you already agree with the author- and if you're buying this book I'm guessing you do. Experienced hipster white guy buddhists will probably be familiar with most of the concepts in this book, but it's worth a read through anyway, if only to give you new ways to explain this stuff to your friends and family. My biggest gripe while reading the book is that the author seems to think following this lifestyle will lead dozens of beautiful gathering (not hunting, of course, because that would confuse their girlbrains) women to line up to bang him. It probably helps sell his pitch to hipster bros but it was pretty weird for me. I'm not denying gender-based division of labor in most studied hunter-gatherer societies, I'm just saying his attachment to everyone being hot (and hot to trot) before agriculture killed the party is a little off-putting.I'll put it this way- I'm a bit of a hippie, but I'm not very secular, I don't dig Buddhism much, and if someone called themselves a biohacker in real life I'd have to try really hard not to punch them. But I liked this book a lot.

Captivated by the Title
I've read copious books on business leadership, health and lifestyle, spirituality and enlightenment, and with each I take away a small nugget of insight or better I may integrate a helpful new habit. Most times the big "life altering a-ha moment" remains allusive but if the read is lite and amusing and provides enjoyable escape from the stresses of work, or raising a family then I'll consider it a fair trade.I found the Awakened Ape both entertaining and informative as a lite introduction to anthropology woven into both health and wellness with enlightenment and spirituality. I was shocked at my own willingness to try the simple steps at introductory meditation (I recommend trying it in a bath, or hot-tub just for fun). Well After giving it a fair couple of tries I will say that there is definitely strong benefit and lingering side effects to it in all very positive ways.....I've read other books by new age authors espousing the benefits, but somehow they just didn't convince me to park my skepticism or pretense to surrender to a few 15 minute experiments like this book did...that in and of it self warranted five stars.

Good basic
I liked the stuff about exercise and diet. The meditation part was a bit interesting, but not convincing. I too believe mediation is valuable, but he got off on some odd tangents. Still, I’m glad I read the book.

Superb!
I really enjoyed this book as the author develops on a myriad of highly interesting subjects. There was clearly a lot of research involved in the process, and all the hard work paid off in this wonderful book. I must've read it in a day or two, I had trouble putting it down.

Second half is brilliant
The first half of the book is good but has a few downs:- he sometimes glorifies and romanticises tribes (though he did a scepticism chapter later on)- he often calls the Paleo-Diet a good diet but when talking about specific foods (page 114/115) he doesn't really explain the Paleo-Diet but more something like the Blue-Zones-Diet (Dan Buettner)Don't get me wrong this is great because science shows that abandoning yoghurt, cheese, oats and sweet potatoes from your diet is not improving health (if you're interested in a nutrition book read Dan Buettner - The Blue Zones Solution). The second half of the book (starting with chapter IV) was so good I actually read it in one session. The way he writes and explains the ways of Buddhism is way different from the Buddhism books I've read before. It's far easier to understand the ideas and actually implement them in your life.I'd even say that the book is still worth it if you are only interested in the second half of the book and would leave out the first chapters.
