Then I'd start over, and stretch it another 1/2" more, repeating the same process. I did this several times until I reached the desired size. Not sure if it was necessary but it didn't feel right stretching it the entire way all at once, so I did it in intervals. Ultimately the hat came out perfectly! I got it exactly where I wanted it, and it feels great. It feels like an L/XL would normally feel after a year or two of natural wear, which is just how I like it. It looks good as well, with no indication it was stretched unnaturally. It's been a few days and so far it's still the same size. Overall this was a great buy. It's such a simple product and I could've probably used homemade items to achieve the same result, but I didn't want to bother when something so convenient exists. I suppose it would "stretch" a hat with an elastic band, but you're probably asking about stretching beyond what the elasticity permits. Assuming that the hat is a cloth "one size fits none," I would think that if the band is pushed beyond the limits of elasticity, then the hat is probably damaged in the process. I'm guessing that the fabric doesn't have that much "give." **Q: does this stretch ladies staw hats** A: Yes it would. You might want to dampen the straw slightly, but you can also do it dry. The hat may re-shrink after a few days and you have to stretch it again. **Q: What's the smallest hat size this will fit into?** A: I wear a 7-5/8" hat and this stretcher barely reaches it and won't actually stretch it. Can't wait to buy more hats, especially since L/XL usually has a much wider selection and cheaper price. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Does the job, but could be sturdier *by K***T on March 27, 2021* With the use of a little steam to soften the felt this certainly did the job of stretching/reshaping my cowboy hat. However the precision of the threading between the nut/turnbuckle and the shaft seems a bit loose as there is more wobble than I expected. In making my 7 5/8 hat more long instead of round I got near the end of the threading and wound up having to disassemble and reassemble the whole thing. Also, the instructions are a bit sparse as there is definitely a front, back, top and bottom to this device that makes it much more effective when you understand - both wooden blocks are tapered and the tapered side on them needs to go in to the hat first, and the end that is stamped with the brand name should go in the front of the hat. Lastly - as at least one other comment I read mentioned - I found I needed to remove the hat band from the outside of the hat and resize it separately. While I was at it I also applied some mink oil to the inside leather band to soften it and allow it to more easily stretch and shape to fit. On the whole a good product that has helped me make my hat fit much more comfortably.
