Growing!
Grass in growing in pretty extreme shade. One hour of direct sun, and the rest of the day VERY mottled.

Have green grass again!
After the last few years of Zoysia decline due to over grown evergreens (tree roots and shade) I decided to try a new approach - cool season grass that does well in shade. Not wanting to spend too much money I looked online and found this Jonathan Green Black Beauty Dense Shade mix. As Fall was approaching in '23, I made the decision to switch out the turf. Since I was on a time crunch, I didn't have time to properly kill off the Zoysia (what was left of it) but merely scalped it down, covered it with some compost and threw the grass seed down. A day or two later I covered it to keep the birds and squirrels off. I hand watered it 2-3x/day (only 600sqft) and then removed the covering once I noticed the rye sticking up (about a week later). Of course it took longer for the Fescue blend to come up. I did decide to throw more seed down a month later as the coverage was thin which helped. I ordered another 3lb bag for the Spring of '24 and applied more seed this year after using an electric dethatcher (verticutter). Overall I am pleased with the look. Coming from a warm season grass, I tried to keep it mowed at 1.25" last Fall and now mow it at 2" which looks good. It may thrive better at taller heights being in the shade but so far 2" works out well and anything over 3" is just too long for me. I have not gone through a hot summer yet but I'm sure the trees will help and I don't mind keeping water on it being a small area.

Expensive, mediocre results
Bought for shaded area 20x30 area. Tilled up the soil and removed all the previous weeds/grass/thatch. Spread with a 12 setting I think it called for for a new lawn. Used an entire 3lb bag bc I wanted a thicc carpet. Lightly raked in the seed and watered daily for about 3 days which was followed by a week of rain. Only about 30% of the area seeded grew grass so far . So we'll see if any more pops up, but for the price I wouldn't buy again. Will by another brand and seed over top

Good but not great
The product arrived on time, and grew fast. Coverage was less than expected from web information.

Sorry to say none of the seed germinated
Sorry to say none of the seed germinated. half was used in a partially shaded area to fill in bare spots and the other half was used on new planting soil in a mostly shaded area; not a single seed germinated in either area. I've purchased other branded grass seed through Amazon with no issues... and yes if was watered faithfully. Sorry, I feel I was taken.

Works Great
I used this in an area I needed to patch along patio blocks in a high traffic area which takes on a lot of water run offThe area gets a mixture of sun and shadeI used a topsoil base and raked some seed into the topsoil with an additional good amount of seed on top with a hay protective barrierIt took about 2 weeks to see the first sign of growth then it grew fastI waited an additional week before cuttingI prefer short cutIt blended nicely with my lawnIt is a darker green color grass which I likeI’m happyI was only trying to patch a small linear area of about 8ft by 1ftI’d says 95% of the intended area is now covered by a dense grassI wasn’t sparingly with the seed andI had to water everyday due to little to no rain during the 2 weeks it took to grow inHope this helpsGood luck

Success where all else had failed
Our property abuts powerline woods where there are large trees right up to the property line, in addition to one large Maple of ours and a long row of 12' Arborvitae that shade twenty feet of our lawn in late afternoon. I have seeded these shaded areas multiple times in the last 20 years using quality products (Scotts, Pennington, etc.) with little to no success; this year I went with the JG Dense Shade and couldn't be happier. It takes a bit longer to germinate (it's in shade, after all)(about 12 to 14 days), but it's all come up, is filling in nicely, and will continue to get thicker as individual grass plants grow. These shady areas are now the best-looking areas of my lawn.
