Great portable amp on the go
I have been using this amp for 2 months now and mainly using this amp to drive my sony mdr z7 headphone with fiio x5 3rd gen dap and let me tell u this combination is the best u can get to bring the most out of my sony mdr z7 headphones. I also use this dap and amp combo to drive my sennheiser hd 650 headphones and this combo will power it fine with no problems and sounds fantastic, and by the way Senn cans are rated @ 300 ohms and this amp drives it fine with no problems, I haven't tried other headsets with higher power so wouldn't be sure if it can drive those or not. Even though my fiio dap can power the sony mdr z7 fine but when u combine this amp it comes to life and sounds wonderful. And this is the best solution u can go to get best sound through portable devices. I have tried my samsung galaxy s8 plus with this amp and sony mdr z7 and I wasn't impressed with the sound that much but once i switched my player to fiio x5 3rd gen there was significant improvement over the sound and have been in love with it since then

simply amazing
My first headphone amp and I’m not an expert but sound is improved immensely. I’m hearing instruments and sounds in songs that I never noticed before. Used it at the gym when I got it and got completely lost in the music.Wish I would’ve bought it sooner instead of being frugal for so long. A little awkward at first to strap on the back of my 6s plus but I figured it out, using only one band so the screen isn’t blocked too much. Paired this with Sennheiser 598 cs and inexpensive Sony on-ear for workouts. Worth every penny. I was considering the a3 and other Fiio products but after some research I’m glad I got this unit. The power output and signal to noise ratio are superior. Simple, robust, easy to use design. Highly recommended.

The obvious choice (but maybe not the best one)
I recently got the venerable Sennheiser HD 650 Open Back Professional Headphone at a great price and decided to test out a bunch of portable headphone amps to go with it. I couldn't find a satisfactory comparison online between this, the Cayin C5 Portable HIFI Audio Headphone Amplifier , and the Aune B1 Class A Portable Phone/Headphone Amplifier , so I decided to buy all three and compare them myself. The short version is that the C5 impressed me more than the A5 but less than the B1, so I'd rank them B1 > C5 > A5.The long version is that as with anything, the best option for you depends on your use case and the sorts of compromises you're willing (and unwilling) to accept. The A5 is a powerful, competent, well-built amp, but in the end I found it had neither the low-budget charms of the Cayin nor the sonic improvements of the Aune. It would be unfair to give it less than 4 stars, though: the A5 is clearly the culmination of Fiio's long march from niche Chi-Fi brand making things that looked like bootleg Apple products to a reputable, even mainstream audio company with high standards of quality and design. As an audio enthusiast, I'm happy to see them succeed, but the market for affordable headphone amps is both bigger and more competitive than it was when Fiio started out, and Fiio is no longer the only real choice. In this respect, you could say Fiio has become a victim of its own success.Of course, the A5 is still a very nice amp. The metal enclosure is attractive and feels good in the hand, but I found the design just a little bit too bland and safe compared to the oddball C5 and lovely B1. The gain and bass boost switches are both useful functions (though I never felt the need to try the bass boost), but it bothered me that the two switches are on different sides of the unit and don't look alike—one uses a flat button design, while the other is a protruding plastic switch. One of the banner features of the A5 is its upgraded, tighter input and output jacks, and these are MUCH nicer than those found on the Cayin or the Aune. Whether this makes more than a cosmetic difference is a separate question, and one I'm not interested in debating.Functionally, I don't think there's much to separate this from the C5. Both deliver comparable power at low impedance, and both refuse to disclose power output above 32 ohms. That said, it seemed to me that the C5 got louder faster than the A5, but the A5 also has an unlabeled volume knob, so that might have been placebo. In the absence of hard numbers, it's possible that the C5 does in fact deliver more power at 300 ohms than the A5. (If anyone can confirm or deny this speculation, please let me know in the comments!) The extreme power output of the C5 was actually its downfall for me: the HD650 is sensitive enough that turning the volume dial past "3" on the LOW-gain setting hurt my ears. The A5 gave me a little more room for fine-tuning. Unfortunately, no matter what volume I used, the sound quality didn't change, only the quantity. I was disappointed enough that I sent the A5 back, perhaps too hastily. Beware of audio forums (and other Amazon reviews) that perpetuate the myth that a simple amp like this will fundamentally alter the sound of your headphones. Unless your headphones are so inefficient that it's physically impossible for their drivers to articulate sound properly without an amp, this isn't going to be a night and day difference. Honestly, I can't claim that my HD650 sounded better from the A5 than straight from my iPhone's headphone jack.Despite the persistent subjectivist claims about the Cayin having a "punchier" sound, the sonic difference between the C5 and A5 is about the same as the flavor difference between vanilla and French vanilla ice cream: negligible. To my ears, neither the C5 nor A5 fundamentally change the sound coming out of your headphones—they just make it louder, which is important if your source doesn't get loud enough for you to hear the quietest parts of your music. Waxing lyrical about how either amp changes sound would be both gratuitous and delusional, so I won't.The Aune B1, however, is a completely different beast. Its sound is noticeably cleaner and more spacious than either the C5 or A5, but it tightens up the bass to a sometimes unwelcome extent. In other words, it really does change the sound, and whether that's a good or bad thing will depend on your preferences. While it's impressive that Aune managed to make a portable class-A amplifier, it's arguably more of a proof of concept than a polished product. Battery life is truly awful, and it gets hot enough that you won't want it near you. Despite its technically better sound, it's harder to recommend than the C5 or A5.Bottom line: if you have low-sensitivity (i.e. power-inefficient) headphones like the Fostex T50RP MK3 Professional Studio Headphones, Semi-Open , the A5 will work some real magic because you'll finally have enough oomph to move the drivers properly. If you have efficient headphones, this amp will just make them louder.

Fantastic little amp
I love this amp!!! Use this to drive my Sony headphones from a variety of devices. Sound is very clear, device is compact, and seems to be very well built. Construction feels solid, buttons and knob movement is smooth. It will play loud enough to induce physical pain! Even when I'm in the mood to crank up the tunes, 50% volume is about all I can take, and it doesn't add an ounce of distortion. There's really no reason to spend more on a headphone amp.....you'll just be poorer. Battery life is great....I flew from Texas to Washington DC round trip and didn't have to charge it.If you're shopping for a nice, portable headphone amp, you've found it.

Dark Sounding Amp!
First off I am a fan of FiiO. I have a A3 that I've been using for about a year and Love It. I only have low ohm headphones. My collection consists of the ATH 50xBB, ATH 1100 Solid Bass, Phillips X2HR and JBL Live 500's and all sound amazing with the A3. I bought the A5 with the idea I'll get a higher ohm headphone in the near future and will be in need of the extra power. But after listening to the A5 for about a week and flipping A3 and A5 back and forth I came to the conclusion that the A5 is much darker sounding than the A3 and is not to my taste. Not to mention the bass boost seems to just distort more than increase the bass output. One more thing, the volume knob is just plain hard to use when strapped to my 6s. The A3 is in the perfect place and easy to use with my 6s. So with that said you can see I love my A3 and ended up returning the A5 and will keep enjoying my A3 till it stops working :-)

Bought a 2nd one to replace the first.
Just bought a 2nd one to replace my first A5 I had since 2016. The battery went in the first one I have had almost 4 years. I like their sound as it is clean. I don't notice any color. I have never had an issue with it til the battery went. I suggest adding a warranty to be safe.I use the A5 for everything that has a line level out. The best setup is the A5 with my fIIO X3II and the FIIO F9pro ear buds with FLAC quality music. Even lower quality ogg files sound great. Just keep in mind low quality goes in, low quality comes out.FIIO did offer to replace my battery on the first one if I send it to China. They said they could not ship the battery due to safety issues. But overall its a very good portable headphone amp and I recommend it.

Otro nivel

Good piece of audio equipment for the money spent.
Went from a Fiio A3 to the A5 and got a nice improvement in the sound coming through my Sony MD 7506's. The A5 is linked directly to my CD player. Well built and a good value which is what I expect from Fiio.
