Where was this book 30 years ago?
I wish this book had existed 30 years ago. But since it didn't, I'm very, very glad that it exists now. It's on the "Read or else" stack for both of my teen Aspies, and it may have saved the life of a young adult friend of ours who was sent off into the world by his parents without anything like sufficient independent living skills. For teens and young adults on the autism spectrum - or who simply need extra help with these skills - this is absolutely a must read. There's nothing else like it out there, and it will save a lot of pain and hardship. For parents of these young people, it's a terrific guide to helping your child become independent. For older folks, it's worth the trip back in time so you can better understand the past and get tips for the present and the future.I work with thousands of families who have autism in their family tree, and I have been singing its praises all over the place. If you're not sure whether or not to purchase it, I'll make it simple for you: Buy it. Get a copy for your local library. Share it around. It's worth the price. :-)

Thinking Outside the Box about Autism
This is a fantastic resource for the autistic community and for those of us who wish to extend our understanding and appreciation of what it is to be unique, precious, and not so neurotypical. Lynne Soraya has written a comprehensive, practical, and at times profoundly philosophical guide to navigating the world without the social sureties that many of us take for granted. She writes clearly and eloquently about the challenges posed by the "unwritten rules" of social behavior and advises in very practical terms how to" deal with system overload," find a job or a roommate, use a debit card and an ATM, and approach the emotional dimension of sex. As a Jungian analyst, I appreciate her "out of the box" application of the Myers-Briggs typology test, mindfulness, and even acting classes to the autism toolkit. And as the author of a novel about an Aspie protagonist with a charming logomania, I love how she concludes her book with a section on idioms. Kudos to Ms. Soraya for writing such a fascinating, readable, and useful book!

super helpful
This book is super helpful, and full of advice from autistic people based on what's actually worked for them. The writing style is extremely supportive rather than punitive, and the tone is more "this can be a challenge - here are some tips" versus "your life is a disaster, TRY HARDER" that I've encountered in other books. It was recommended by a friend who has three autistic children, and it's been super helpful with my own autistic child

Excellent book on life skills and managing life with autism generally
This book is great for helping you understand what is going on around you. It is a book for people on all parts of the spectrum. A lot of the social cues information really helped me understand what other people thinking and why they do the things that they do. The book is also very relatable and very very comforting for someone with autism. The book really makes you feel like you're not alone and it gave me a lot of hope and inspiration.

A Valuable "Handbook of Instructions"!
I have a 19-year-old daughter with high-functioning autism (formerly known as "Asperger's." She wasn't diagnosed until she was 16 years old, and it saved our family! This book gives excellent suggestions and guidelines for an older adolescent with an autism diagnosis--how to be safe in the "outside world," how to get along with roommates/housemates and co-workers, how to function in a neurotypical world with an atypical neurology! If you wonder what your autistic child/person needs to know to enable him/her to live independently, this book is a great resource. It gave me hope, and it gave my daughter direction.

So very vital.
This is an important book for the public to read so that they will understand how a child on the Autism Spectrum transitions to living independently. This subject is vital for those who work with children on the Spectrum whether they be parents or teachers etc. It is important for the public to support this transition and be open about it.The range of the Autism Spectrum is long and wide. The supporting curriculum must also be long and wide and comprehensive.

This book is a great tool and very readable.
I counsel folks with AS of all ages especially young adults. I am also a mom of a neuro-diverse young adult . This book is wonderful addition to the rapidly-expanding field of books to help folks with neuro-diversity become independent. I love the "voice" in this book: it is clear, personal and very relevant in important ways! Please make an audio book of this. There is great information in this book and not everyone is comfotable getting information from print.

Aspergers world
Just the book to set the tone for the limitations and challenges of living with aspergers. Dosn't offer solutions, as much as telling stories of overcoming problems.
