Some fairly nice uncredited George Benson
I bought the version of this CD on the Music on CD label. I like their jewel cases, which are more heavy duty than the standard jewel cases. The music itself is interesting in spots, but mostly nothing special to my ears -- mostly mid 70's commercial funky disco stuff that often sounds like it belongs in a commercial or on a TV/movie screen. Some of the keyboards sound cheesy and "dated" (I hate that word). But I kind of liked the upbeat, happy vibe of "Moonglow/Theme from Picnic" with its Motown cadence at the end of each 'A' section. The theme from "Jaws" is fun for a few minutes but goes on too long, although it is nicely arranged. "Dragonfly", apparently the final track on the original release, is a nice tune, too. For me though, the four bonus tracks are the most interesting, mostly because George Benson shows up on three of the four bonus tunes to lend a little of his energy to the proceedings. "Con Alma", with Benson's nifty fretwork, is probably my favorite tune on the CD. George Benson is not mentioned anywhere in the credits, but his sound is unmistakable.

Naysayers go away - I am a yaysayer.
Let the naysayers say nay - let them, see if any of us care - we don't. Because we don't put people into little boxes. Lalo probably had a great time making this wacky CD and it's the very wackiness that makes it so appealing and fun. Therefore where they say nay I say yay and I don't care who knows it. Call it funk, call it jazz/disco, call it psychedelic pop, call it a road trip gone amuck, call it whatever you like, but it's just too much fun to dismiss out of hand. This album simply makes me smile. Favorite track is Moonglow/Picnic.

Serious disco funk - 'rare groove' at its best
I love this era and this is top grade pre-Star Wars era boogie funk. I guess if you hate mid-70s disco you might not enjoy Black Widow, but why would you? Add to the fact that it ain't just any ordinary disco - it's the master himself performing it. Also it should be noted that less than half the tracks here actually swing toward full-blown disco whereas the majority really are much more in a smooth and smouldering jazz funk vein. I like both, but I guess if you don't like jazz funk fusion and forays into disco, which is funk's natural cousin, then it may not be for you. For me, it's one of the best Lalo soundtracks I have. In a word, exquisite.

Schifrin meets disco for thumpin' beats...
A rare example of the nefarious "Creed Taylor effect" helping rather than ruining an artist. Here, Schifrin's flair for the cinematic riff meets disco for some thumpin' beats then heads for lounge classic territory. The results include rethinkings of "Quiet Village,"Tabu," & the "Theme from Picnic." There's a dance floor rendition of "Jaws" that honors both John Williams & Bill Murray, plus some Schifrin originals worthy of his soundtrack scores. The bonus cuts add value. Certainly belongs on your shelf next to "Dirty Harry" & "Mission Impossible." For true afficionados, also seek out & possess "The Cat," a 1964 LP with Jimmy Smith. Bob Rixon, WFMU

A Great Album With Two Throwaways...
...those being the Jaws Theme - which over stays it's welcome at the 2 minute mark or less, and an absolutely HORRID and tuneless rendition of Quiet Village. The real winner here is the album closer, Dragonfly. That track could go on forever. All in all, a nice slice of a forgotten, funky summer. A Kojak watchin', Lincoln Continental drivin', crevat wearin', cigarette smokin', fur struttin' summer. Enjoy!

I was underwhelmed by the selection of music; I could get used to it, since it was the 7o's era .

!!!!!
