Dim Sum, Please! (Mandarin Edition): A Bilingual English & Mandarin Children's Book Paperback – September 12, 2021

My husband and I originally purchased the Cantonese Edition of this book since I am Cantonese and we were trying to teach her some Cantonese. My toddler ended up loving the book and the cute illustrations. We were excited to see that Dim Sum, Please! came in Mandarin Edition because my husband is Taiwanese and speaks Mandarin! My daughter was able to pick up the words easily, but I also think learning Mandarin is easier than Cantonese. The author did a great job with both versions! There were some words that I did not know in Mandarin so it helped me learn as well! Very happy with both purchases!

It is paper back. There won’t be longevity for this book in a household with toddlers and babies. Had I noticed I would have chosen the e-version

I bought this for my nephew's children. They love dim sum, and their grandmother is teaching them how to speak and read mandarin, so this seemed to be a good fit for them.

My son received this as a gift (I had put it on a wish list) since I'm trying to teach him Chinese. I'm American-born and conversational in Mandarin, and my husband doesn't speak Mandarin. There are a couple of phrases in this book that feel unnatural as a native English speaker (describing turnip cake as "fresh and crispy"), and also phrases that felt unnatural to native Mandarin and Cantonese speakers that I asked. I will qualify that I only asked references from HK and Taiwan. Also, the illustrations for all the food photos have the same background (family eating) with a different dish in front of them, which feels like a cost saving measure. Aside from these two things, the story is nice and simple, has the staples of dim sum, and I appreciate the effort put forth by the authors.
