IT DOES NOT GIVE AWAY THE ENDING].First off, if it's not perfectly clear from the title, trailers, rating, and description, Sausage Party is NOT a kid's movie. There are physical acts depicted in this movie (amongst food items, mind you) that are comparable to fairly wild pornography, and a lot of the food gets "baked" in the Cheech and Chong sense of the term. This film is like no movie you've ever seen.Secondly, Sausage Party is a deeply, radically, subversive film. On the surface, it's a story about intelligent, talking food items, waiting around in the grocery store for the day they are "chosen by the gods" and taken away in someone's shopping cart. They of course don't know what actually happens to food when "the gods" (people) take them home. The hot dogs and buns in particular look forward to "Red White and Blue Day" (the Fourth of July) when many of them them will be taken away to paradise. The sausages and buns also look forward to finally getting out of their plastic wrappings and "getting together" in maybe the most obvious sexual metaphor in history.Your expectation with a premise like this might be a funny, romping chase / rescue routine with plenty of entertaining animation. And you wouldn't be wrong, entirely, except that Sausage Party also considers the horror of living beings being chopped, cooked, and eaten as part of its premise. It's darkly hilarious, but truly scary and horrific. Again, children should not watch this movie.This is again deeply subversive film. It's not just that human beings are the villains, gobbling down helpless foods that believe they're bound for paradise, although that's actually pretty disturbing in itself. But on another (fairly obvious) level, Sausage Party is really questioning, criticizing, and laughing at the idea of religion, gods, and the afterlife writ large in pointed, sometimes gruesome ways. It contemplates a world in which people (people who are sausages, tacos, buns, bottles of whiskey, etc.) fight to the death against tradition and authority and consider what they should do if they decide none of those things are what they are supposed to have been.If the scary, drug-referencing, explicitly sexual elements of Sausage Party don't bother you, it's actually incredibly uplifting. The ending sequence is one of those most intense and satisfying I've seen in a long while, and comes with a high-concept kicker that may open the door to a fascinating sequel.If you know Seth Rogen's humor, from Pineapple Express or This is the End, and enjoy it, you must see this film, although it's really above and beyond those films in several different ways. If you're up for the other other things described in this review, you ought to see it. There is really no other movie out there like it. It may be my favorite movie of 2016, and it would have been a terrible mistake to have dismissed it as silly stoner humor (not that that's a bad thing) and not seen it, which I nearly did.Five stars. Beneath the crude humor is a surprisingly clever commentary on belief, identity, and society. The animation is sharp, the voice cast is excellent, and the jokes land hard if you enjoy adult humor.
