Star Wars: Legacy of the Force #9: Invincible

Convincing Action; Unconvincing Characterization
After the Dark Nest disastrous bit of horrific storytelling, I've always taken anything Troy Denning writes with a grain of salt. Yes, that's a cliche. This book is pretty good.Painful PartsFirst off, Denning can't do Boba Fett at all. Nearly all of Fett's lines are out of character, and Denning's version of Fett just plain talks too much. That nit aside, there's not that much of Fett in the book, so it's not all that painful.Second, there's not much else to do with Jacen's character, so absolutely nothing is done. The man spends more than half the book glowering or reining in his smoldering anger because of what happened "last time".Third, Ben's bit seems contrived. It's like the author stuck him in because he was told to have a piece with Ben Skywalker. This is especially true in the end scenes of the book.Fourth, the whole thing with Tahiri's character "development" is so predictable it's hokey.Fifth, there seemed to be a bit of "oh, this is the last book of the series, we don't really need that character, let's kill him off" going on.Sixth, loose ends. I hate loose ends. *** spoiler-ish comment coming*** At the end of the book, a certain Jedi character just drops off into space, much like Raynar Thul did all those years ago. I know it's becuase they want things to write about in the future but the ploys are getting pathetic.Pretty PartsFirst, I'm hopelessly attached to the character of Jaina Solo. Seeing as she was in a good number of the 299 pages of this skinny book, I was happy as a hutt at a fixed podrace.Second, Luke does a little more thank just sit on his hands all day.Third, the action scenes were well written. Star Wars thrives on healthy action scenes. That a good number of the situations these days are pathetically set up does not detract from the power these authors have over spinning the action portions of their tales.Fourth, the book passed the late night test... anything that can keep me up to 3:20 in the morning gets some props for the accomplishment.Fifth, the end was satisfying, if predictable. At one point they almost had me believing they'd do something incredibly stupid but then I remembered that this is Star Wars and those light and fluffy "awww" notes are the bread and butter of the galaxy. So, all in all, if you're reading this it most likely means you've read the rest of the books and are contemplating whether or not to go ahead and spend the $17.00-ish. That or you've already bought it, read it, written your review, and just want to see what others have to say. The reviews here are rather mixed and your opinion will most likely differ from ours, so go ahead, read the book then say your piece. It's a worthwhile read.

Good quality
Book arrived in good condition. There was this small tear on the backside of the cover leaf but considering when this book was released, that is an acceptable downside.Very happy to have this book, and even in hardcover format.

Better Ending to a Bad Series...
First of all, let me tell you that this ending, while getting a lot of negative reviews is actually quite good. If you take the story that is presented, the characterization which develops, the pacing, and overall movement, this is a very good book. If you look at this book as merely a means to tie up a million loose ends, well, you are out of luck. This series has been hindered with enough loose frayed ends to a million threads already. I feel that this clean, streamlined approach to the ending left me more than satisfied about the primaries, and good enough about the tangents. While there have been stories left unsaid in this ending, Troy basically said, let's finish this series, and let me write a good book at the same time. His approach, I feel, was the only way to accomplish this goal.Basically, the Legacy of the Force series teaches us that the Sith Lord gene always skips a generation, and that dark apprentices can sometimes be turned around. It teaches us that 14 year old boys can sometimes find themselves in the difficult position of choosing between torture and seduction or keeping your integrity intact. It teaches us that a lot of interesting ideas in the use of the force can sometimes fizzle out like fireworks which look great for a time, and then disappear. It teaches us that Luke, indeed, has not suffered enough. It teaches us that Han and Leia have also, not suffered enough. It teaches us that Boba Fett has feelings, if not quite a heart. It teaches us that having the biggest gun in the galaxy as a plot device is simply too powerful, and needs to implode itself. It teaches us a lot of things, but I feel the most important lesson I learned is that I don't like multiple-author series. They just don't work. Stick with one author. This is my new motto.Still, I rate this book 4 stars. As a stand alone book, it is a good read. In terms of tying-up-loose-ends-expectations, it might not be all you dreamed it would be. But if it did tie up everything, the book would have been a huge morass of bad writing. Like staring at a mosaic, with each piece a detailed story. Something that gives you a headache. This series didn't deserve its loose ends tied up. What it needed was a good book.It got one.

A great conclusion to the series
After what has been a bit of a hit and miss series, trot denning concludes the Legacy of the Force series in spectacular fashion. Emotionally charged, great fight scenes that top even those in Inferno and Sacrifice (the two other great books in this series), and homage to the man Jacen Solo was before the turn to the dark side.My man beef with this series was the pace at which jacen fell to the dark side and is subsequently dispatched. I'd have preferred he hung around and tormented his family for a while.Would recommend this book though as its highly entertaining

Outstanding
A lot of people have complained that this book felt a little rushed and incomplete but for me it was more of a spiritual second part of the previous book by another author. My only regret for this book is that it was a little too short, however it really did end the story well. You cannot please everybody all of the time
