VOSTOK company story starts back in 1942, when one of the Moscow watch-making plants has been evacuated from Moscow to a little town Chistopol located on the Kama River. Defense equipment was the only company output during war years, but as soon as the war was over VOSTOK started to make mechanical wrist watches - the main production item ever since. In 1965 Vostok company was appointed an official supplier of watches for the Defense Department of the Soviet Union. This year marks the creation of the world-famous "Komandirskie" ("Commander") watch. Military watch grew very popular even with people who were unaware which end of the gun bullet comes off, mainly due to high precision, excessive reliability and durability. The appearance of the watch also contributes to its appeal - functional and clear-cut design invoked the feeling of belonging to the tough world of combat professional. The experience which VOSTOK gained through development of the army watch was the foundation of our next special watch - "Amphibian". This impressive timepiece in stainless-steel case endured the depth of 200 meters - kind of a wrist VDV. Success of the professional watches determined the company's present philosophy - to create mechanical watches maintaining precise timekeeping at any temperature, in any environment, surviving heavy pressure and blows. The viability of the chosen strategy is now time-proven. A vast multitude of people both in Russia and abroad boasting "VOSTOK" watches and various international prizes awarded for high quality and commercial success testify to this. Vostok Trading is a long-term partner of VOSTOK Watch Factory in the U.S.

So I just received the watch today. For the price of $50 I'm extremely pleased. The quality/price ratio is very high in my opinion and that's why I'm giving it 5 out or 5. There's a lot of value out this mechanical watch at this price. If it's like my other Vostok it'll be pretty rugged & keep decent time. I have an older Vostok that's at least 12 or 13 years old it still keeps good time after being neglected for the better part of a decade.Don't expect Rolex quality materials for $50. It's more like the Timex of Russia except that Vostok still makes watches in Russia. Plus you get cold ward kitsch. Some observations:- The lume on this is quite good in comparison to my other Vostok - perhaps that's because it's new.- It has a quick date set feature when you go past 12 to set the date you can back up to 8 then go past 12 again to go to the next day. That's nice.- Date changes at instantly midnight - a nice feature.- I'm pretty sure it has acrylic crystal but that's OK as scratches can be buffed out.- I'm not sure what the strap is made out of, feels like pleather to me but it's comfortable and suits the watch.- The crown is screw down.- Bezel rotates in both directions.- The semi-domed crystal can caused distortion depending on the viewing angle but it's clear when viewed straight on- The dial is clearly printed and lettering is sharp- I don't have a tool actually measure but it appears to me that second hand is running at 3hz (6 ticks/sec).- The specs say 40mm but I've got two different calipers that measure 39mm.It's shipped from Russia and took about a month. It came with Russian chocolate which is very good.I would highly recommend for someone looking to get a mechanical watch that's got a bit of history and doesn't cost too much.4/21/17 - update: So I've had this watch for a few months and I do like this watch. It does keep pretty good time but sometimes I neglect to wind it so it's hard to compare against time.gov. It's been fairly durable with the exception of the buckle which I got caught on an edge and the spring bar popped out. That could probably could be a better metal. I've put a v rubber strap with a locking clasp on it so that won't happen again. My only 'complaint' is that it wears small - most of my other watches are 42mm or greater. But I don't think you can go wrong with this.

Really cool watch, draws a lot of attention
Really cool watch, draws a lot of attention. I will get a face protector band for it. Keeps excellent time. Came with a bar of the BEST chocolate EVER! Got here fast, a month ahead of schedule. Bought it from Boctok, straight from the factory in Chistopol. You can check it out on google earth, interesting place. I am already looking at the K-35 LOL I`m addicted! If you want a time piece that doesn't break the bank and is fine quality and is different , these are it. There are many models of the Komanderskie. Check out the Amphibian as well. Has a screw down crown, I wind it once in a day or day and a half. This has to be the best watch for the money around. Be warned, after you wear it a while, you may begin speaking in a Russian accent. Go ahead, Comrade, purchase one! You won`t be disappointed.

great watch and conversation starter
I've found the nostalgia of a mechanical watch from the cold war era, (the product internal workings was designed to work after a nuclear exchange) 1965 tech. There balance of loose tolerances and workmanship is beyond compare. It keeps excellent time, real head turner. Winding it, setting day, date, time takes some getting use to. The old school Soviet features adds to its charm. The instructions are in Russian so I recommend you Google an English translation online. For the money, its great value.

I love these watches. Maybe too much.
Beware, before buying please know. If you buy one. You'll buy another. It'll start off simple.. a $59 komandirskie. Just a watch no big deal. Then you want a white dial, then a green dial, then a scuba dude, then a GMT. And then a 24 hour dial. Next thing you know you're 15 Vostok in with mod parts coming from half way across the world and you realize you have a problem. Welcome to the club.

Beautiful piece of history !
1.) The watch is beautiful and well finished.2.) I checked for 24 hours and it is accurate minute by minute. I have not checked how many seconds it is +/- but I know that if it is not accurate we can open the back and adjust the watch using a tiny liver present there.3.) Wound movement runs for around 42 hours.4.) Strap is not high quality but it can be used. I am wearing it to office where I work as an Engineer for a multinational bank.5.) Case diameter - 40mm, lug to lug - 44.45 approximately6.) Bezel does not click but it can be used to time. It is metal on metal friction based bezel.7.) Screw down crown.8.) Plastic crystal.10.) Available for around 43$ on Meranom.com but there delivery will take much longer.I love this watch for the history associated with it and the fact that it comes with the original 2414A movement which was designed around 1965.

Beautiful
This watch is beautiful. The design is unique, the quality of the craftsmanship is immediately evident, and it feels really well-made.The manual isn't in english, but programming it is very easy after a quick google search for an english manual. I encountered a hiccup when the manual that I came across said to wind them counter-clockwise (which doesn't work), instead of clockwise. 10-15 turns clockwise, making sure to not the tension of the spring recoil, and you're good to go!Seriously a fantastic watch. Love it.

Excellent watch!
Mine just arrived today! It's gorgeous! I love how it looks! I am in agreement though with the people who say that the stock watchband does not do this beautiful watch justice. As I was a punk rocker, and later a goth back in high school in the early-2000's, I still have an affinity for Goth & Punk fashion from my adolescent years. I bought a Nemesis Watch wristband style watchband for it (with 2 red Soviet stars on it) that I think looks fantastic on it! You can see it in my enclosed photos. Best $50 watch I've ever purchased!

Lovely piece for the price!
Suprised by the quality for the price I paid. Strap quality could be better but again that is more of a feedback can't take any stars away due to the price you have to compromise somewhere. But the watch itself is great quality! Will be great as an every day watch! I have significantly more expensive watches but this one will be a favorite for sure.

Trash
Low quality trash watch. Arrived with broken crown. Looks and feels incredibly cheap. A 10$ Casio is 100 times better.
