A Good Book for Learning FCPX
This is a good book for learning a less than perfect program. Even though there have been upgrades to FCPX, they are mostly bug fixes and minor improvements overall so I would say it's still a valuable book if you're trying to get acquainted with the new paradigm of Final Cut Pro X.Here's the thing - even though it's been a few years since the redesign, a lot of FCP7 users are just now finally coming to grips that they will have to make the switch. Hanging on to the old version (which is still better in my opinion, as of this writing) will not keep you current. Younger editors are coming into the workforce using FCPX, Premiere, etc. and they will do their work faster than "old timers" because those programs utilize the 64-bit architecture. The new plugins and effects that look modern and cool are all being made for the new programs so you can't take advantage of the current video styles unless you make the switch to a 64-bit program.I suggest reading this book cover to cover one time if you're getting ready to switch from FCP7 to FCPX or if you are totally new to video editing. There's A LOT of information to learn and you can't grasp it all at once. Just let the ideas wash over you and get used to the concepts. This way, when you go back to page one and start practicing with the program along with the book, you'll feel more confident and your learning process will go more smoothly.

6 months later...
On the one hand, this book will be helpful maybe to people only just now coming over to Final Cut Pro X; however, I ordered this book in October and didn't get it until April. In all fairness, the book was evidently delayed as Apple put out new versions of FCPX, so that all the updates could be addressed in print; however, in the last six months of pulling my hair out I have either figured most of this book's information out on my own or used tutorial videos on various sites. If you have been with FCPX as long as I have, you may not need this book, but newbies can learn directly from the guy who created this family of programs.

Mac Only DVD
As advertised. I purchased this for the video files on the DVD. Would've been nice if they specified that the included DVD can only be read by Mac computers. I had to go to a neighbor's house to copy the videos to an external drive so I could use them on my PC with Adobe Premiere.

Excellent to a point.
The manual does a great job in advancing skills. This is especially true after studying Diana Weynand's book "Final Cut Pro X Second Edition Professional Video Editing." Its chapters on "Color Correction Basics" and "Adjusting Color & Saturation" go over the top. If I ever get to use the majority of the techniques discussed in those chapters, I would need another more detailed explanation.

Final Cut ProX,Advanced editing
This book advances the detail of editing functions, and is easy to understand. However it may be better to have had some experience with FCPX before purchasing this book. The illustrations were clear, unlike some in past publications that were difficult to see. For a very elderly user of FCP, I found this book very helpful.

DVD loading problems
Loading the DVD's found disk one to be corrupt and could not load, after some research found that this was/is a typically problem with the DVD'sHad to go to supplier to get down load, however the DVD had already shut down the Final Cut Pro X program on my computer, now need to clear it from the corrupt files.

Media Defective, No Reason to Purchase Book
I couldn't really rate the contents of the book, the lessons are based on the 2 discs that come with the book containing media, and lessons that correspond to all the contents of the book. The Media is defective, it will not open with the software it is meant to teach, the opposite of the first book which worked fine. In trying to fix the problem I discovered this is a very common problem all over the forums for the last couple years, unfortunately with no resolve for me.

not a bad book.
not a bad book .. it just is too verbose ... would rather have something that gets to the point (much) quicker

Great way to learn
Did a beginners course, and passed the apple cert using the first book in this series. Decided to take the plunge into Advanced, and so got the book and am working through it myself. It is definitely a level up from the beginners, as it should be. Same format, same good learning materials. Keyframing is covered nicely here, and it is probably the hardest thing in the book.Good series, going to take the advanced exam next week, wish me luck!

Approfondito
