Quite simply, there is a spring inside the handle and when you apply force greater than the resistance of the spring the handle moves down against the tamper. Now this one isn’t as precise as the more expensive ones on the market as the distance the spring can move once the spring is overcome is quite large. To get the handle to “bottom out” I think the pressure is in the region of 50lb. Not the so called golden rule of 30lb. That being said I am happy with it as it brings more consistent tamping than my judgement alone and is great for others to learn with. Hope this helps

Q: To what lb of pressure is it calibrated to?

I thought it was 30lb but read somewhere that it could be higher. It’s easy to check and I would but I don’t have it with me. What I can say is it has given me much more consistent coffee taste. It’s only one parameter but a key one to get right.

No, it’s a single calibration. Once you push down with the correct force, the spring loading will activate. However, there’s no option to alter the force.
