Fred Gets Dressed

My 3 1/3 yr old loves reading this book with me. The words are easy for a toddler to remember and repeat. Her favorite is the bow for the dog’s tail. The pictures are well drawn and if you’re a bigot just pretend Fred is short for Frederica or Winifred.

This is a delightful book - funny, sweet, powerful message, and not preachy. Fred is looking for something to wear and finds his Mom's clothing, jewellery, and makeup. His parents accept his choice without question or comment and simply join in the activity of getting dressed together, in gender-expansive ways. Such beautiful, powerful modelling and confidence-building and shows children that they can be accepted and loved just as they are.

Didn't expect it to be a story about a boy who dresses up as a girl and the reluctant parents are fine with that 🙄

My children and I enjoyed this funny and challenging story, mostly told through the pictures. Great fun. We bought it to prove to my 4 year old that pink is not just for girls.

We just received this today and have already read it multiple times. It's an instant hit for my 3 year old, who is going through a phase of not wanting to wear clothes. "I'm just like Fred!", he says!Fred romps around naked, which is hilarious and relatable to many parents. He finds his parents' closet and tries on dad's and mom's clothes. Of course, mom's stuff is much more fun to a toddler, so you know where it's going. This is where some parents, at least as I've seen in other reviews here, will have a problem. If you have a problem with a toddler boy playing dress up (gasp!), then just move right along. Honestly, this book is refreshing, cute, and innocent, and I love that both parents encourage Fred, and even get involved themselves. I absolutely love this book and am recommending it to all my friends and loved ones with toddlers. The illustrations are adorable too.
