Q: How to have steady-on mode all the time without reset each time the lights are turned on

I don't think you can. Just press the button until it reaches that setting. That's what we've been doing.

Q: Do the lights stay on the selected mode as long as they are plugged in? or do they reset periodically to all?

This String Lights is a very good decoration for Christmas, Party, Bedroom, Wedding and garden. It equipped with a controller box to change it's flash modes, and totally 8 different flash modes in total. It will keep every one modes when it turned on/plugged in, instead of a regularly sequence. It didn't have memory function, so it could not always keep the same modes.

of course...it usually comes in a padded envelope or small box ...usually for free in 2 days

Hmm, the plug is odd, but on my lights, the plug definitely fits. Perhaps, bend the plug prongs out, or in -depending on what works best for you. I personally, absolutely love these lights.☺️
