IT WAS GOOD BY THE TIME I GOT TO THE END.
This novel left me a little ambivalent. The underlying message of this book appeared to be that dyslexics are often regarded as "dumb" "unintelligent" and "weird." During the plot, this was spread to include those who are regarded as odd, such as children who are disabled in some way. I understood the premise and the message, this was quite clear. However, I couldn't bring it in my heart to fully embrace the main character because of the emphasis on her hatred of books! This might be a little unfair because of her Aunt's hard stance on books, which is explained later in the book. However, Trudy's rejection of an elderly dog who depends on her is in direct opposition to the fact that she stole him from an abusive owner in the first place. She hates Christopher, no matter how hard he tried to appologise to her for apparently lying to her about the reason he is in Truhart in the first place, even though we know how the ending will be.The townspeople - to begin with - are horrible and almost put me off reading the rest of the book. It was only because of the dog and Christopher that I finished it.In the end, I liked the book in spite of the off-putting attitude of Trudy and her determination to throw away a good future...

Illiterate Girl Inherits Bookshop
The blurb had promise. I liked the idea of a dyslexic woman inheriting a bookshop; throw in an academic whose work needs books and you have an interested (potential) reader. The other thing that drew me tot he story was the small town setting. The story started off with at an interesting scene where Trudy arrives in Truhart, but the first about a third of the story was rather slow for me and I found myself struggling to connect with the heroine. Perhaps that's the author's plan, because she still got me engaged in the characters. The story really picks up about halfway through and this momentum continues through to the end.Trudy is a drifter who has inherited a bookshop from an Aunty who was never supportive. For a girl who can't read, and therefore hates books, this is like a joke. All she wants is trash the books, sell the bookshop and get out of Truhart. However, life has other plans for her. Handsome English professor, Kit Darlington, shows up with his Englishman charm and convinces her to take her time - and maybe make some money out of the books while she's at it. The decision to wait a few days turns into a journey of self-discovery for Trudy as learns to appreciate who she is. She also learns a few things about love and responsibility, while challenging Kit to be true to himself and everyone else. The story is told from Trudy's POV, which allows the reader to get to know her thoughts and motivations, and discover the amazing person underneath the rough exterior. The book also enlightened me about dyslexia and got me curious to learning more than the basic stuff I know about the condition.

I didn't like it but in the end I loved it. Glad i stuck with it.
I felt this book was hard to get into but I'm not one to give up easily. Trudy's life got off to a rocky start after her mother's death from cancer. Because of her dyslexia people thought she was dumb. Her inability to read opened up new avenues for her that never would have happened. She had a lot of love and compassion for others and eventually a love of her own.

Great read
I was doubtful at first. But very soon I discovered I Loved this book. Dealing with a reading disability must be very difficult especially when it is not diagnosed at a young age this is a wonderful love story . I find myself hoping there will be another book Describing how she gets the help and learns to overcome the problem.

A good fish-out-of-water story
Very good story and interesting main characters that weren't overly stereotypical, especially Trudy. Some foul language, but not a lot. Sex outside of marriage, but not graphic. Would make a good tv movie.

Unique
Characters that are individual and not seen before. A community of supporting personalities that remind me of my mother and her friends as they enjoyed their small town activities.

If you enjoy books, you're unsure at first how to react ...
If you enjoy books, you're unsure at first how to react to them being thrown out through door and windows. Yet, after reading the story as it develops, you get more and more involved..let yourself taken in to it.
