Interesting, weird view of the Tang-dynasty Chinese world
Li Shangyin is one of the best-known Tang Dynasty poets, and famously hard to translate because of his intricate verse and many allusions. I had never read these fragments and was not only pleased with the excellent translation, which never calls attention to itself, but also enjoyed Li’s sometimes snarky, sometimes compassionate, sometimes bittersweet view of his contemporaries and their foibles.
