Anyone, young or old, seeking external hard drive, this one is a must!
5/11/2025 - LOVE it! I highly recommend "this" Western Digital hard drive. No noise. Easy to connect to old PC and then transfer to new PC. Storage capacity, 1 TB for me is plenty and knowing I have such storage, no worries. It is most compatible with both of my PC's. Small item, most reliable. Great value to me due to moving file/folders from my old PC to new PC!

Great quality, worked perfectly. Not SSD.
This portable HDD drive worked exactly as we needed it to. Great for backing up a computer or transferring files. I bought a new computer and needed to transfer all my photos and documents from the old to the new, and this served the purpose perfectly. It will also be used to keep another computer backed up. Happy with it stationary storage, but I will be getting an SSD for portable storage because it is more durable and can handle being dropped better than this HDD drive will be able to. An SSD is also three times the cost for the same size, so this old-school drive, though slower, was worth it. And it wasn't slow, per se. I didn't feel like I was waiting around forever for it to finish. Just slower than an SSD would be.

Reliable HDD with useful software, a must have!
I purchased and received the WD 1TB Black My Passport Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBYNN0010BBK-WESN directly from amazon, and I've had no problems overall. My first impression was that this product's size is great, seems well built and worked great out of the box with no issues whatsoever. I still have to test the transfer speeds, so I wont talk about that until then. Pros • Well packed • Pocket size • USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 compatible • Error testing, formatting and configuration with included WD Drive Utilities™ software • Password protection with hardware encryption with included WD Security™ software • Auto backup with included WD Backup™ software • Built by Western Digital, a well trusted and reliable company Cons • Warranty being 2 years • No Linux software Comes with • WD My Passport HDD • USB 3.0 Type A to Micro-B cable • WD Security™, WD Drive Utilities™ and WD Backup™ software for Windows and Mac • Quick installation guide

Drive is pretty good, warranty service is just okay.
*EDIT* After a little over a year, I had a partition on this drive fail. WD provides no software or first party support of any kind in terms of data recovery. Luckily I know my way around a computer pretty well and was able to recover my data myself, the average user however will probably have to shell out some money in the case that this happens to them. Also while WD is providing me with a new drive as a replacement, I am having to pay for shipping, which I find to be a little ridiculous. This entire process has been a headache and while I've purchased two new drives to use as backups, I am reluctant to buy from WD again. Taking a star off because of all of this. *ORIGINAL* This hard drive functions perfectly. It's very light weight and has a very small footprint. By default it comes formatted for Windows (NTFS I believe) and reformatting it to work with my MacBook was a bit challenging, but that was more due to macOS than this drive. Needless to say, after formatting, this drive now functions flawlessly and I use it for Time Machine backups regularly. The only downfall I've found is that it seems like LED in the back won't completely turn off of the drive is connected to power, even if the computer is off. In my case, this was evident due to the fact that I have it connected to a powered USB hub, so even when my computer is off, the drive still receives power. This however is solved by just unplugging the drive when not in use so it really is just a minor issue, if even one at all. I will definitely go with Western Digital for my next external hard drive purchase

Checking the Disk Drive, Sector by Sector
I had no trouble installing this disk drive. Also, it is quite fast at backing up my data. In reading other product reviews of external disk drives (not just WD), I have noticed a concern about the relatively high failure rate of disk drives in general -- though, according to product reviews and evaluations, Western Digital's drives seem to fare a little better than Seagate's. But to help with this problem, if you purchase a WD, you will notice that the disk comes with some third-party software that allows you to thoroughly check the health of the disk, sector by sector, whenever you like. It can take a few hours, but you can always let it run in the background. It is among the apps called "WD Drive Utilities." By running this app every now and then, you can lessen the possibility of a nasty surprise later.

Great and Portable External HD
Very happy with the size and portability of this HD. Although I will only be talking about the HD and not the portability because I bought this HD more to have it always plugged in to my computer. I have no issues with it. I cant even hear it. I only know its plugged in because I can see it on my computer. It works amazing. I am using it for all my drop box files and backup. Very happy with this and I will recommend this HD to anyone. Also the size is awesome. Its nice and small and fits anywhere.

Excellent external solution at a great price - great for traveling or simple backup solutions
I haven't done any benchmarks on this but it has much faster access speeds over wireless than our very old WD 3.5 inch external drive. It's very a nice, compact design and very quiet. Just plug it in and go. I have it connected to our Netgear router and shared as both a Windows share and Apple Time Machine backup location, which works great so far. Only drawback is the cable length - it's really short so if you want to hook it up permanently and stash it somewhere out of site you might need to invest in a longer one.

Best portable HD
If you're like me, I rely heavily on portable hard drives because I need the extra space. I have several portable hard drives and they are all Western Digital hard drives. WD is the brand to go to when you need hard drives. They're good quality and reliable. Some people have had problems with their drives and probably they were unlucky and got a malfunctioning one. But from all the WD my passport hard drives I have (I have 5 already), they have worked perfectly fine. They're ready to use for PCs, so just plug it in and start transferring files.
