Q: What is the size of the letters?

The letters are 2.5 cm high and the wide depends on the letter, it's different for an I than for an A.

Q: Can this work on regular store bought icing?

If it is buttercream icing and you let it set up or crust( touch it and it doesn't leave a dent), then yes. If it is soft icing out of a can, they usually don't crust, then I would' try it. Experimenting can be fun though. Spread your icing on a smooth surface( cake board, cookie sheet) and try it. If it doesn't come up clean, then it probably won't work on a cake. Hope this helps.
