The screws are very strong and stayed sharp enough to tap through two pieces of 1/4'' steel. The driver bit provided isn't a very snug fit, the magnet is weak and the magnet fell out on the first tap, but it worked well enough.

I bought a box of these to finish a job. I was using VGBUY screws but they would not self-tap through aluminum but the Mellewell screws went through it like butter. Not all screws are the same.

This is less of a review and more of passing along of some basic information about stainless steel (which the mfr. is not doing here). Stainless steel comes in different grades, mostly based on the amount of chromium vs carbon steel in the make-up. Series 300 stainless is the most common. Its what you see on your kitchen appliance fronts. But as steel strengths go, series 300 is rather soft. Certainly too soft to be self-drilling (as this product claims to be). So series 400 stainless steel is harder and stronger and used for products needing more strength, such as certain rifle barrels and self-drilling screws that need a greater degree of rust protection than carbon steel. But with that strength (and greater carbon content) comes less protection against corrosion. And that is the reason that these screws come with a hard black coating, and not just for decoration. The more of this coating that can be preserved, the less likely they will rust. My plan is to drill pilot holes with a regular drill bit before installing the screws. This should help preserve more of the coating. So if you need BOTH self-drilling AND stainless steel, this is likely as good as you are going to get. If you want more protection (and don't need black color), then pre-drilling and then using a series 300 screw might work depending on the material you are fastening. Most everything is a compromise.

Self-tapping, or as the original patent calls them, self-drilling screws are one of the miracles of the modern age. The hex head fits nearly into a screwdriver bit holder, and is much less likely to cam out than a Phillips bit. The BEWARE OF DOG signs are held in with these which may very well outlast the signs themselves. Put them in the bit holder, screw them in, done.

The quality is excellent—definitely a step up from what you'd typically find at a big box store. I’ve used them to drive through fairly thick steel with no issues, and after a couple of months, the stainless steel shows no signs of rust. Reliable and tough.

These self tapping screws are worse than worthless. I have a metal garage that I'm framing the inside of so I need to sink these into the metal frame to secure my 2x4's. First there's absolutely no way to get them to self tap into the metal; I have to drill holes first. Second, when I try to get them into the hole I've drilled about 90% of the time they either won't go in or they will actually shear off leaving a portion in the hole I've drilled. I had some different self tapping screws that worked pretty well so I know it can be done. I purchased these because I need a large quantity and these weren't to expensive. Trust me; save yourself the heartache if you're going into metal beams and get something better than these. I'll probably throw out the rest of the bag these are so worthless.
