Functional
It works well. Hard to tell how much water is left in it without opening it, but that is the tradeoff for using metal not plastic.

So far it works...
I purchased this only because most of the good winter chicken water heater bases I found require a metal not plastic waterer, so despite mixed reviews warning about potential rust problems, I put out the money in the hopes it won't be a waste. So far all is good except for 2 major design flaws/annoyances which I think appear inherent in most double-walled vacuum based wagerers and I would like to see resolved by some decent engineering:1) the riveted in external handle is in no way strong enough to carry a full 5 gallon waterer with the lid on, meaning unless you're lucky to have your water source extremely nearby (if you do, why do you need a separate water jug?) you have no choice but to use the stronger "interior" handle to carry a filled waterer to it's final destination witu the outer lid off. This not only means lots of sloshing and spilling of water (which below 30 deg F / -2 degrees C is not fun,) but it rests in;2) a race to your destination, as with the outer lid off, there is no vacuum and therefore water flows from the valve at a constant rate until you secure the outer lid into place. So if you're carrying a distance and/or doing so at sub-freezing temperatures and even walking in ice... this is simply a bad design. Why not weld a considerably stronger handle to the exterior and use more than just a single "pin" at the bottom to secure the lid and base together? For $60+ bucks, it wouldn't be asking much...Other than that, so far (the entire few weeks we've had it) it seems to work fine.Oh, one other suggestion: increase the slope or find some other way to truly prevent determined birds from standing/roosting on top of the waterer to prevent the inevitable and incessant fecal bombardment from 1.5 feet altitude that accumulates in not clean water for your birds...Thank you.

Holds 5 gallons and saved us from hauling water every day
This is a sturdy, 5-gallon watered that had helped make our homestead life easier. We bought one, along with the heater base, for our chickens. We're planning on getting a second one for when we change our rabbits over to a colony setup. Worth the money!

Arrived damaged
It’s a nice waterer, but it wasn’t packed very well, and it was bent pretty badly in shipping. I needed it right away, so I straightened it out the best I could and used it anyway.

I use this on a heater so the chicken’s water doesnt freeze.

Good water when it stays together
The one thing you need to be sturdy on this product is the handle, I have had this waterer in service about a month, and the welds holding the handle on the top of the waterer let loose this morning. Not I am going to have to compromise the seal it makes to work to fix the thing, hopefully a bolt, nut and a couple rubber washers will do the trick. I have owned a water like this before and it rusted out at the bottom after about 3 years so I got my money's worth from that one. I was rather disappointed in this one after lifting it 4 or 5 times that the welds holding the handle to the top of the product were done so poorly.

Works great
Works well, no leaks of on a flat surface. Hope it lasts a few years like the other ones we've had.
