Review: Distinctive taste & rarity make Black Ivory Clear choice over Kopi Luwak - I am passionate about coffee, and first tried Kopi Luwak. I was disappointed because it was not at all distinctive. I learned of Black Ivory, and was intrigued by the process and the rarity. After tasting Black Ivory, I was delighted at its distinctive taste and lack of bitterness. Aside from the distinctive taste, Black Ivory is superior to Kopi Luwak in taste, rarity and ethics. I bought the triple pack so I could keep one for my spouse and myself and share the other two with friends.
Review: Definitely different - The pack that you receive is very small. I prepared this coffee pour over style immediately after I ground the beans. It was only enough to make less than three 8 ounce cups of coffee. That's with going by the instructions of my pour over, using about one tablespoon for every 4 ounces of liquid. As far as taste, first impression was the smell... it's definitely different than the normal coffee smell you're used to smelling from a coffee house or your coffee maker in the morning. It's more earthy. My kids swore they could smell hints of elephant poop. *eyeroll* But the smell also comes across in the flavor. It tastes earthy and grassy. It's smooth and has no bitterness. I didn't taste the chocolate notes but I did get the tamarind/spice elements of it. My hubby and I tried this, along with my parents, brother and his wife and we all agreed that it wasn't bad but is it worth all this money? The consensus was...no. It's definitely "different" but not something I think I would ever crave or want again as far as flavor. It's more of a novelty item if anything because of how rare it is. The best thing it has going for it is that the money from this supposedly helps elephants.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Are these beans from elephant poo?**
A: These are 100% Thai Arabica beans that have been naturally refined by elephants.

**Q: What is the best way to brew this?**
A: Which brewer to use is a bit subjective as it depends on how concentrated you like your coffee. My preference as Founder is with the Black Ivory Coffee syphon as it gives a really nice balanced cup and helps to bring out the more delicate notes. If you cannot afford our syphon or do not want to pay this amount a less expensive option is with a pour over like a V60. If you prefer a stronger cup I recommend to brew with a mocha pot. To be blunt, the roast profile is not designed for an espresso so I don't recommend it brewed this way and on the opposite spectrum I really do not like it with a French Press / plunger as the cup is not very balanced. Thanks for your question and feel free to ask anything else. Our syphon can be found on our website and you can ask questions direct to me there as well.

**Q: Correct me if I’m wrong, they want $200 for 3 single servings of coffee?**
A: I will be happy to correct you. Each pack of 35 grams / 1.23 ounces can serve roughly 4 espresso size cups or 2 mugs depending on your brewing method. As a result this triple pack is the equivalent of 12 espresso size cups or 6 mugs of Black Ivory Coffee. Please also note that this is the world's most expensive coffee and with only roughly 100 kg / 220 lbs harvested in 2019 it is among the rarest in the world. As the owner of Black Ivory Coffee, my creation is not meant to appeal to a wide audience. It is for those who love a luxury product that tastes great, loves an intrigued story that can be chains with friends/loved ones, is rare, socially conscious and in this case, supports elephants in N.E. Thailand. I hope this gives you the information you require but please do not hesitate to ask a follow‐up question. Your inquiry is appreciated.

**Q: Just out of curiosity is this from a specific species of elephant? If so which one?**
A: The elephants who voluntarily snack on coffee cherries in order to create Black Ivory Coffee are generically referred to as Thai elephants. However, "Thai elephants" is not a name of species or sub-species. Specifically, they fall under the species of Asian elephant and sub-species of Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus). To clarify, Indian elephants refer to the sub-species not the geographic location which in this case is Thailand. I hope this helps even though it sounds a bit confusing.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Expensive, but worth it.
*by S***S on December 27, 2018*

I used this both for espresso and for regular brewed coffee. The taste is different with remarkable and also subtle notes. I have tried the genuine Kopi Luwak and this is definitely more distinctive to my taste buds. I ordered this once as a treat. And loved it so much, I am now onto my third order. If you are at all on the fence, I heartily say to "go for it". The service is great and the product arrived quickly and well packaged. Caution that it can be habit forming.
