Q: Is a cell phone necessary to use this? thinking about buying for elementary school classroom where there are no cell phones.

Thank you for your question. You do not need to attach to a cell phone to view. Viewing can be done 3 ways: Projection on to a wall, Looking directly in the Foldscope or use a phone/tablet or even a chromebook. We provide a magnet coupler with a donut hole in the middle. As long as the donut hole is bigger than the lens, you can use pretty much most devices with a lens.
