A very tensive and well done film demolishing american mentalit. Yet Jazz is unjustly and inappropriately pictured
4 stars for the tension, but less than 3 for its inappropriate use of the subject.Whiplash is a bitter and tensive story of how the american dream might be twisted, transforming people in mere and mean competitive slave of ambition. It shows how the idea of mere dedication does not mean you are talented and can really make it.Basically it says the opposite of the usual american doctrine. However, and do not get offended if you are a big fan of this film, I think it fails completely if you look at it from a jazz point of view, because it reduces jazz to an athletic performance, from a childish point of view where musicians are good if they play fast an on the beat. This is maybe what really disappointed me about this film: it would have been much better if not set in jazz world, because it feels like watching somethings else, like a Full Metal Jacket confrontation between rookie and drill instructor. I appreciate that there are some great twist and that, at the end, none is as he looks, in a victim/offender kind of relation that tells a lot about the effects of american mentality and will to victory and competition no-matter what. In that regard, the film is very interesting, but I find hateful that, after watching marvelous, fine and soulful films like Round Midnight (to me the best music-film ever made, not just in the jazz world), here jazz is treated like a mere sport activity, and jazz people look like yuppies or hateful college students who just think about success and career... I hope jazz in New York has not turned to such a crap...Blu ray is perfect

Straight into my personal top 10 films ever!
Masterlpiece: the only word that comes to my mind.I can't simply find any fault with this film. The actors are terrific and the story is very, very powerful. What I liked most were the twists the story had especially the one at the end.And if you like music in general and jazz in particular , you are going to see this film several times.By the way, the director, Damien Chazelle isn't telling the world that this is the only or best way to teach music: he is just describinga situation that unfortunately many people will recognize also from the world of sport...An essential film, in my humble opinion.

Tests the Viewer
The performance that Miles Teller gives in Damien Chazelleās new film āWhiplashā reminded me a lot of Robert De Niroās in āRaging Bullā. They both play tenacious, unrelenting characters and do so in a way that canāt be forgotten and stays with the viewer long after the movieās over. They may be pursuing different things, De Niro with boxing and Teller with drumming, but theyāre each after the same goal: greatness. And thatās what this film is all about, reaching a goal that is relative to the person trying to achieve it.In this case, it centers around a guy who never feels understood. Heās attending the most prestigious music school in the country and is constantly working to be āone of the greatsā. Who, in his eyes, is someone like Buddy Rich. Then unexpectedly, heās given a chance to prove his chops on the renowned studio band instructed by Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons). Heās soon met with Fletcherās abusive teaching tactics and is continuously tested under pressure. The question is, can he withstand. It tests the psyche of a young man and shows how far a person will go for something they love and want to do for the rest of their life. That being said, itās a harsh movie. The audience is thrown right into the pressure cooker along with Teller, and if youāre not ready for it, it can be unsettling and scary. But thatās one of the main reasons why I liked it. Not only does it test the main character, it tests the viewer. You also canāt deny the masterful performances on display and finesse that the director brings along with them. Needless to say, this is a must-see. If I had seen it in 2014, it wouldāve undoubtedly made my top ten.
