Little House on the Prairie: Little House, Book 3

My honest review
I remember these books from my childhood and the story still remains in my heart and mind. The main story of embarking on a westward journey, setting up a homestead and enduring all of the struggles of that lifestyle is still profound and moving. It will inspire any child. However, while I realize that this is a great book that sends the reader back in time, it could have benefited from some serious editing. There are so many digressions into extremely detailed subjects that most kids (or adults for that matter) cannot hold a real interest in. In fact, it sometimes reads as a historical account or a technical manual rather than a work of fiction. I am sure these details were extremely important to the author but they are hard to get through as a reader. I was surprised to feel this way since I remember loving these stories as a child. Perhaps I skimmed those parts...I do realize that this type of writing was more acceptable back when this was originally published. I also realize that these details lend the story an honesty and accuracy that many stories lack. Plus this type of detail is useful for collective memory. However, if you are planning to buy this book to read to your child out loud be prepared to skip over these parts or fumble through an in-depth account of wagon axles and other similar technical details that drone on for several pages at a time.I still feel that the main story has a lot to offer but wanted to warn others about my experience who, like me, many have forgotten the content of the story and only have an idealized memory of this book. There aren't a lot of balanced reviews about this book so I wanted to be a voice on here.

Nice quality!
This is a very nice edition. The page colors in the illustrations are lovely and the paper quality is thicker and nicer.

Little house in full color
I purchased this book for my daughter for Christmas. She loves little house in the big woods which we have as a paperback and we have gotten little house on the prairie a few times from the library but can not ever make it through it before we have to return. So, I decided we should buy it. My daughter wanted the full color. I actually ended up getting it in full color and the original version with the sketches, both hardcover. I see the appeal of the full color. The images are gorgeous and what little girl wouldn't want to see Laura and her family come to life with color. I personally prefer the regular sketches overall. The full color versions pages are thick and sort of glossy white. The book is very heavy due to the thick pages. Nothing crazy but noticeably heavier than the regular version. Enough that you notice when you pick it up. I know my daughter will love it and I enjoy the color images as well, but I guess I had expected them to be on regular book paper and sort of subdued. They are extremely vibrant and quite lovely really..just different than I had expected. A nice special edition but if you like the feel of the regular pages and the beautiful black sketches you might not be as pleased with the full color version. I'm still going with 5 stars because it will be cherished I'm sure.

Beautifully Illustrated
This is the standard Little House on the Prairie book with the only difference being that the book is a hard back with dust cover and all of the illustrations by Garth Williams are in full color. You can certainly find the paperback version with the black and white illustrations more cheaply, but I wanted this particular version to read to my girls because I noted when I first started this series with them, the old fashioned language and concepts were hard to follow and they lost interests. The colored pictures seems to make the story more interesting for them, and they are more engaged. Not sure if this is really due to the pictures or completely random, but the book is beautifully done, and from a personal perspective, I really like it - I loved the series as a child, but had never seen the pictures in color - added a nice touch for me as the parent reading the book each night.

Follow The Early American Family
When I was a child, I had the entire series of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Books. My babysitter at the time, gave me her set. I was careful to loan out the books one at a time to friends I knew would cherish them as much as I did.I started giving these books to my grandchild, and at first we read them together, then she started reading them on her own. Now, we watch the old television series together, and it brings back memories of our days reading together. We both love the television series as much as we do the books, they portray the life as it was. Maybe not as primitive, but certainly as children , they accept the hard work and the limited income the Wilder's have. This family is a superb e ample if a hapoy family, their ups and downs, and they have many, and the manger in which the family faces each obstacle. An excellent example of a true family life.Recommended. prisrob7-19-15

so sweet
What a lesson in how life was. The efficiency of everything, the usefulness and value of the tools. It’s made me look around at modern life and question our ways, our greed, our consumption. So touching and good, I can’t wait to read the next 4!

Beautiful
My 7 year old was in love with how beautiful this book was. The sad thing is that none of the other books in the series come in this presentation. Such a shame. This book was too difficult for her to read it herself, but it was read to her at bedtime and we both loved it.
