Kingston Technology USB3.2 Gen2 Workflow Station Dock w/5G USB-A/C Hub

I had a 9+ years old Lexar Professional Workflow which needed replacing. There are lots of card readers on the market, but being a professional photographer and videographer, I couldn't trust random Chinese brands. Kingston is a well established brand though and this unit allows me to upload ALL the cards we get after a shoot. And, yes, we have 8 different cameras! So this unit is perfect. The speed is as fast as advertised, but because we upload the files overnight speed isn't a big deal for me. The build quality is good. I saw reviews saying it's a cheap build, but it definitely isn't. It's all plastic, but feels solid. It looks metallic, which is great, too. I bought three extra SD card modules for it and they fit perfectly. What amazes me, is that it will read and shows EIGHT cards at once. To me, this is a game changer. Very easy to use! Highly recommended, especially for professionals.

I purchased one of these in August 2023 and it had the spring push to insert/eject type mechanism for the micro sd cards. Considering the way the units are designed and that they sit in a dock the spring type make it easier to retrieve the cards especailly if you have big hands.Unfortunately when I purchased a second reader it came with just the push in type.The reason this is a bit of a pain firstly is that removing a card from a device that isnt fixed in place can be quite tricky with one hand.Secondly having both types it can be quite cumbersome trying to remove a card from a spring type thinking its just going to come out and vice versa.Now I know I can mark the readers to identify them, but should I really have too.Ive attached picture showing the two types 001 is the spring type and 002 is the push typeSo far I have failed in my quest to find another spring type 001 reader. No luck with various online stores.I even contacted Kingston by email and strangely after replying to the first email from them with the reasons I am asking if I can purchase the spring type. They replied to my email asking the same questions.I am yet to receive anything back from them.These are good units as you can simultaneously read from both ports at the same time. The flashing led next to each card tells you which one is being read from or written too at the time.

Form factor - while I do not have the Kingston dock, that is of no concern - this works just fine on my desk, and fits nicely into my camera bag for trips.It's convenient having two card slots.The reader works extremely well - no disconnections, and the build quality feels great.If you have a UHS-II SD card and need an affordable, performant reader, this is a great option.

Cercavo un lettore di schede SD, che ne potesse commettere molte contemporaneamente, che supportasse lettura e scrittura delle UHS-II, e che non tradisse le specifiche pubblicizzate.Sono caduto in piedi?LA PRATICAQuesto hub riesce dove molti lettori falliscono: mantiene la promessa di lettura e scrittura veloce, e permette di connettere fino a otto schede SD, alla massima velocità. Non ho memoria o esperienza di soluzioni del genere. Al momento possiedo due schede SD ad alta velocità di lettura e scrittura, e per i primi lavori svolti in ambito video, questo dispositivo ha garantito velocità eccezionali, di gran lunga superiori a quelle del mio lettore SD integrato nel laptop.Lavorando infatti a qualità molto alta, spesso in 10 bit, mi servono alte prestazioni di trasferimento: in cinque minuti copio circa 20 GB, cosa non da poco.Una soluzione non da tutti riportata e che alle porte interne USB C è possibile collegare anche SSD portatili: se girate quindi con black magic o altre cinema camera tramite SSD sarete coperti anche in questa evenienza, con una multiporta capace di ospitarne fino a 4.I CONTROL’unica cosa contraria che ho riscontrato è che il dispositivo viene spedito dotato di un adattatore USB e USB C, non del tutto utile in caso si necessiti di lettori SD (per le quali questo hub è nato).Ho dovuto infatti comprare un modulo con lettore SD a parte per ovviare al problema.CONCLUSIONIIl dispositivo in questione è necessario per chi decide di lavorare in ambito video. Sì già acquistando un singolo modulo con lettore SD si può lavorare senza problemi, almeno all’inizio, con questo hub si arriva preparati al momento in cui sarà necessario collegare diversi supporti al proprio pc, che risaputamente ha un numero di porte limitato e per di più scomode da raggiungere. Consigliato!
