Q: new owner to baby ball python, Should the probe be place between the glass & heat mat? to get accurate temp?

Never place the thermostat probe in the enclosure. Place it between the bottom of the enclosure and the heating pad. This is to ensure your animal does not displace the probe and cause the thermostat to malfunction, potentially heating to lethal levels. Use a laser thermometer gun to measure surface temperature inside the enclosure on the hot spot, and tune the thermostat setting until you reach the desired temperature inside. I typically end up setting my thermostat to about 5 degrees higher than the desired hot spot temperature, as that's about the difference between the probe on the outer surface and the inner surface.

Q: I need a thermostat heater to keep inside a chest freezer to keep my chemicals above freezing temperature, will this do the trick?

Probably not. The heating pad is only 16 watts, I think most chest freezers have a much higher cooling capacity.

It always stays on. You need to attach it to a thermostat. It will regulate the temperature.

The device itself is a thermostat as it measures temp via the temperature probe.
