brilliant book
if you want to know the ins and outs of the history of England this book is a fantastic story from the layman's point of view giving detail of major events in the history of England by those who were actually witness to the various events. I cannot say enough about how good the book is so you must read it

A really different historical presentation
Reading a book which presents history from the perspective of often very simple people is heartwarming. I have never felt more english.

Excellent concept and delivery
Bite sized chunks of the history of England from some truly fascinating sources. The whole book moves seamlessly through history, linked well by the author and all in all a thoroughly educational and enjoyable read.

It's good, but some parts are too short and some too long.
Worth the read, but don't think you'll be missing anything by skipping some parts. The notes at the beginning and end of each "Part" will help you understand. The book looks absolutely splendid too on the outside.

Riveting. Very accessible and fascinating. I lost hours having ‘a quick read’

Rather worthwhile read
I am a sucker for most historical fiction but found this rendition of real English history - not quite finished yet - very interesting even to me as an amateur historian myself. It makes little scenarios of pungent points in our history, often illuminated by contemporary writings.I recommend it since if we don't know who we were we cannot understand what nation we have become, how and why. Not much here for the Celtic nations. This is English history.

Most interesting.
Haven't finished reading it yet but so far it's kept me enthralled! It whizzes through the kings and queens with lots of facts but also lots of 'gossip'. I never knew we Brits were so interesting. Recommended.
