The Pushcart War (New York Review Children's Collection)

charming and instructional
It is a story of goodness over greed and power. It is fought as a classical tragedy where small conquers big. Ay the conclusion of this great tale, I think we all can agree, it really is a great read. This is not to mention, we learn many interesting trivia about New York City, like how many pushcarts there are. Hmmm, more than a few.

Stands the test of time
I used this for a fifth grade read-aloud, coinciding with the personal finance unit. Great story that includes economics, civil disobedience, unionization, and so much more. Kids found it engaging. Extra fun to use a variety of voices for the characters.

root for the underdogs!
Frank the Flower, Morris the Florist and many of the their pushcart-owning friends on the streets of New York City are being grazed, nudged, and even smashed as the trucks take up more and more of the streets. A mayor who favors the shady Big Three trucking company owners won't do anything, so the peddlers and Maxie Hammerman, the Pushcart King, decide they must fight back themselves.Note: early versions of this book set the time frame of The Pushcart War as being years after the book was written, but being told as if in the past. I'm assuming that as time went on, they continued to change the years, as the latest version I have seen lists a more recent decade than the 1970s for when the war took place. I find it a little harder to place this in current-day Manhattan, so I would rather have seen an explanation in the front of the book and kept the dates of the war the same as originally written. I'd take off a small fraction of a star for that.Loved reading this in grade school. My husband and middle-school daughter loved it when we read it aloud years ago, and I recently introduced and adult friend to it who like it as well.

Peace is the answer--a story about solidarity, kindness, and nonviolent action
I never forgot this book: it was one of my favorite books from childhood. It was read to us at summer camp in the late 1970s. The image of pushcart sellers using pea shooters to puncture truck tires stayed with me ever since. I just reread the book to my 5.5 year old girl. She liked it a lot, though I think it was a bit long and slightly complex for her. Still very much worth reading, though best for children in the 7-11 range. The book is slightly dated, and overly long. It could stand some editing in parts. The author has a habit of digressing needlessly: she sometimes loses the excitement of the story. One could easily pare 50 pages from the book.Caveats aside, I'm happy that this book continues to enthrall new generations. Peace never goes out of style, and nor does a good story. After 30 years I still remembered this story and still believe in its message.

Children will love this way that history is told in this delightful ...
Just as delightful as I remember. If you are a member of a union and you want to explain how unions protect workers from totally unreasonable demands of employers without hammering children over the head, this is the book! Children will love this way that history is told in this delightful little book. Even as an adult, I love this telling of how unions could be if those leading were truly about supporting everyone instead of furthering their own careers and groups of friends.

Good book from my childhood.
I wanted to read it again to see how I remembered it when I was 12.
