Best LED retrofit I've tried
This is the best LED downlight retrofit I've tried. The color rendering is great. The light is great compared to the incandescent it replaced and much better than compact florescent PARs. The trim is integrated with the unit, so its appearance is cleaner than the two-piece downlight reflector and trim it replaced with a noticeable seam where the ring meets the reflector. The springy ears are easier to use than the springy wires that come on other retrofits. So the question is: why buy this vs. models that are 1/2 as much?1.It's wet rated with appropriate sealing and a ground strap.2. It's IC fixture compatible.3. The CRI is better than less expensive options.4. Multiple color temperatures are available.5. It comes with a foam insulating ring to seal around the fixture to prevent HVAC loss into unconditioned space above. It's certainly a great choice for a high traffic area where color is important, bathrooms where damp or wet-rated fixtures are required or installations that are recessed into attics.OTOH, in lower traffic, dry areas without air leakage concerns, a lower cost option may be more cost-effective.My least favorite parts?1. The foam seal that goes around the trim to make it airtight seems to be folded up in the instruction booklet, and never quite gets the crease smoothed out, making installation a little bit more difficult -- not to mention the fact that the foam is not attached to the fixture in the first place. You'll see what I mean when you get the thing installed and remember you forgot the foam!2. For some reason, not every unit comes with the insulated protective box that covers the quick-connect to the socket. I didn't install in a wet location, so it wasn't a problem, but the fact that some were missing is weird. The box is also pretty big, so removing the socket bracket from the existing fixture is mandatory. How difficult this is will depend on how the bracket is attached to your recessed can.3. Attaching the ground strap is the hardest part, due to the fact that you'll be trying to fasten a wingnut or screw above your head in a confined space. To sum up: I like these retrofits, they're not hard to install, they look great and give great light, and they're a great choice for kitchen or bath applications, worth the premium over other choices.
